Alumni Band Newsletter November, 2011

Dear Band Alums,

I hope you all enjoyed a relaxing Thanksgiving and you are now gearing up for a wonderful Winter Solstice, Hanukkah, Kwanzaa, Festivus, and/or Christmas celebrations.  A thank you to all those who shared updates and upcoming events for this newsletter, otherwise this introductory paragraph would be about it.

Alumni Chapters:

I know for some of you, reading this newsletter each month is the highest level of involvement you wish to have with other Nevada alums.  However, for those that crave more interaction, did you know there are other Alumni Chapters?  While some are ‘exclusive’ to specific groups, like the Alumni Band, others, particularly regional chapters, welcome all Nevada alums.  These groups offer everything from an opportunity to watch a Nevada game with fellow fans, to outings, to volunteer opportunities.  Here is a list of the current active Alumni Chapters (of course we are first on the list- yay for alphabetical order):

Upcoming events:

Holiday Chorus Concert

The Nevada Gay Men’s Chorus will have their holiday concert December 10, 2011, at Trinity Episcopal Church, at 7:00 p.m.  Tickets are $15.  For more information see their website: http://www.nvgmc.org/

The Nutcracker

Katie Gilkey (daughter of Cristie Long Gilkey) will be performing in the Reno Dance Company's production of the Nutcracker at John Ascuaga's Nugget on

Saturday, December 17 at 2PM & 7PM,

Sunday December 18 at 2PM,

Friday, December 23 at 8PM and

Saturday, December 24 at 2PM

This will be a beautiful production and anyone looking to support the local arts community and the RDC's 10th Anniversary is welcome to come!  Tickets are sold through the Nugget by calling (775) 356-3300 or by visiting the website at www.janugget.com.

Member Updates:

Lucas and Tina Koenig

Tina and Lucas Koenig would like to announce the arrival of our second child Linnea Grace Koenig.  She was born at 3:20p.m. on Tuesday November 8, 2011.  She was our anniversary gift from God.

Douglas “Skip” Staton

For regular readers, you know Skip has had quite a bit of health drama lately.  He had his gallbladder removed on November 22, but he was back at work on the 26th.  We are very happy to hear he is on the mend and hope this is the end of his shenanigans.   Alumni Band wasn’t the same without him.

Dawn Etcheverry Miller

Dawn and I took over the running the Alumni Band in 1999, and she continues to do much of the behind the scenes work.  However, our friendship goes back much farther than that—when she took in a freshman with chicken pox who was kicked out of the dorms.

Dawn was diagnosed with cancer approximately two weeks ago.  She had surgery on November 29th.  Currently she is expecting to undergo six months of chemotherapy, followed by radiation.  If you know Dawn, you will not be surprised she is facing this head on and pulling no punches.  I am asking, as her friend, if you would send prayers, good Karma, positive energy, add her to prayer chains; whatever your belief system is.  I know she would do it for me.  In fact, she has.

Main Station Farm:

I already sent this to several of you, so if you have already seen this, I apologize (this is copied from the original email that came to me).

Nevada’s Main Station Farm is 112 years old. It’s owned by the University of Nevada College of Agriculture, and it’s one of the few active university teaching farms in America -- the place where our country’s next generation of farmers comes to learn about sustainable agriculture.
And, in two weeks, it could be on its way to becoming a McDonald’s. Or a strip mall. Or a Baby Gap.
That’s because the university Board of Regents is seeking approval from the Reno City Council to sell off 104 acres of farmland to commercial developers.
Wendy Baroli is a small farmer herself -- she lives in Reno, and she knows the value that Main Station Farm provides to her community as well as to the sustainable food movement as a whole. Wendy started a petition on Change.org asking the Reno City Council to deny the Board of Regents’ request to allow commercial developers to destroy 104 acres of Main Station Farm. Please sign Wendy’s petition today.
This problem stretches far beyond Reno: All across America, the richest and most bountiful farmland is being paved over to make way for corporate interests. In fact, America loses more than one acre of farmland to commercial development every minute of every day,
Protecting teaching farms like Main Station Farm is absolutely critical to the future of sustainable farming. Allowing farmland to be destroyed sets a dangerous precedent for other cities and universities looking to make a quick buck during a recession.
One member of the Reno City Council -- Jessica Sferrazza --  has filed an appeal to deny the rezoning request, and a hearing is scheduled for December 14th. The Reno City Council needs to know by then that members of the public are watching and feel strongly that Main Station Farm must be protected.
Please sign small farmer Wendy Baroli’s petition asking the Reno City Council not to approve a request to destroy 104 acres of one of America's few university farms.

Thanks for being a change-maker.

Until next month, take care, be well, and keep music in your life.
