Alumni Band Schedule Homecoming 2011
Dear Band Alums,Jessie Turner and Joan (Turner) Atkins
I am writing this as an update for my sister Jessie Turner (2000-2002). I also marched (1997-2000) so we are both alumni.
Jessie was diagnosed in 2009 with an astrocytoma tumor in her spine. They were not able to remove it but were able to do a biopsy in November 2009. The prognosis at that time was good as it was a slow growing tumor. Jessie regained limited use of her legs and was able to get around independently. However, last October she started to lose her mobility and went back to the in-patient rehab and it was then discovered that she has additional tumors in her neck and brain. She has undergone her radiation and chemo treatment and is waiting to run her course with shingles before her next round of chemo. We have had so many prayers and positive energy sent our way and just wanted to let the alumni community know that we are truly grateful and blessed to have some many friends thinking of us.
Joan (Turner) Atkins
Douglas “Skip” Staton:
Skip is now in his fifth week in the hospital in Winnemucca. He was being treated for a wound on his leg which wasn’t healing and had many complications. In today’s update, Cheri Stingley Staton writes:
Skip update: The test on his heart checked out good. The test on his stomach is a little on the iffy side as they found polyps. However, his doctor told him that most of those types of polyps turn out to benign...hopefully, that will be true in his case.
Donato Cabrera:
Band Alum Donato Cabrera (some may remember him as Donald), made his debut as the conductor of the Green Bay Symphony Orchestra on Saturday, October 8, opening the GBSO’s 98th season. A FAVOR:
Whether you will be joining us for Alumni Band this year or not, I would like to ask a favor of you. Over the years, I have had the joyous duty of announcing weddings, births, and new jobs. The flip side of that is I also am also the bearer of news of illnesses and death. Jessie Turner was the second band alum to pass this year (Kim Sutter passed away at the end of March.) The very existence of the Alumni Band was due to a funeral (John Montgomery’s) which crystallized the idea that we didn’t just want to see each other at weddings and funerals. Over the years, there have been more funerals, but also good news of those members of our band family that beat the odds. I ask that this Friday evening, wherever you are, you take a moment and raise a glass, say a prayer, or just send a good thought out into the universe for all the members of your band family. I would really appreciate it.
Sincerely,
Kiara
