Step 0: get a good collectibles guide, and follow it closely. Getting all collectibles not only unlocks all related trophies, but also gives you a boost in everything, making Apocaliptic mid and end game a stroll in the demonic park.
DON'T save up on souls! Many guides say you should, that is such BS, the amount of souls in the game is endless, and the amount of necessary souls for virtually anything is easily available in mid and endgame.
