Itseems as though .avi format is not supported by quicktime(the player on your Iphone). So, you could convert all of those videos to a format supported by your IOS device(mp4,mov,m4v) using VLC and Handbrake but this is very time consuming and less than ideal.
Or there is a program that can convert those files on the fly for you, but requires using your computer as a server to convert the files for you as you stream them to your device. A little setup work, free, and might be at least a temporary solution.
AVI is not a codec; it is a container type (specifically, it is the conatiner for video and audio in the Video for Windows system). You can't export directly to AVI format from Adobe Media Encoder on Mac OS.
It's an animated banner I created in After Effects and saved as an .mov. I opened that in VLC and converted it, choosing AVI as Encapsulation. However, I'm not sure of what to choose under the Video codec tab.
This online converter doesn't work for larger files -- or you have to pay for it -- price undisclosed. VLC seems to have some kind of bug on mac right now. It goes into some kind of loop when converting to .avi, where it keeps re-writing the same file over and over and won't stop. The file does seem to have all the frames from the original video, but it's *much* smaller, which I think means it has been compressed substantially, which wasn't what I hoped for. It went from over a gig to about 11M.
Sorting through files on my hard drive, I found a folder of short home videos (maybe taken with Flip video camera) which I never imported into Photos, where I keep all my other short home videos. So now I want to import those .avi videos into OS X Photos, but when I try I get "This item cannot be added to your photo Library because it may be an unrecognizable file format."
That is perfect. Be sure to convert all videos to compatible formats with QuickTime Player 7, while you are still running Mojave or an earlier system version. QuickTime Player 7 is one of the applications, that will no longer work, once you upgrade the Mac to macOS 10.15 Catalina. Video formats that will work on the next system version are listed here: About incompatible media in iMovie for macOS - Apple Support
I have some .avi clips in my Photos app that I imported a few years ago into iPhoto. When I try to reimport them now into the Photos app I get the same "unsupported file type" that you get. Opening it in Quicktime 10 to convert it to a .mov file does not cure it.
From your response I surmise that the mp4 format is what OS X Photos needs in order to import the video file. I used my QuickTime Player 7 to open the avi file, then exported a version as a mp4 file, and viola, OS X Photos was able to import and play that mp4 file. Thanks.
I was recording a screen session and then my power cord came out and the laptop shut down. I tried to open the .avi file, but it says that windows cannot open it. I thought mabye it was because the file was too big (50 gigs) so i tried to trim it, but because I cant open it will not work. Does anyone have any suggestions on how to repair the file or open it?
AVI files usually become unplayable because of corruption, in most cases if this was with a standard xvid/divx or uncompressed AVI codec then this can be repaired - you will typically need 10% more space plus the original file size space to repair it - so say 60GB free to have a go.
I am trying to open avi files stored on a sd card from a casio exilim camera, Prism video converter tells me it uses a 'motion jpeg' codec. The 'open avi' VI crashes when I try to open the file in labview ( illegal avi session). Any ideas?? I'm using LV 2011.
The file is saved as an avi file by the camera. When I open it with 'prism video converter' it says that the codec is 'motion jpeg'. The file however definately has a .avi file extension. It is my understanding that the new breed of Hard Drive and SD card cameras are using this new format as my commercial motion analysis software has to be upgraded to load these new avi's. FYI the camera is a casio exilim fh100 and is used because of it's excellent high speed video capability. I am currently having to use 'prism video coverter' to convert the avi to a Digital Video 1 format so that labview can open the file. I would much prefer not to have to take this extra step.
If you use the Get Filter Name vi, do you see the codec that your camera is using in that list? Is it the generic MJPEG codec that comes with Windows? I also have that codec installed, and am getting some strange behavior as well.
I've gotten in touch with our PSE for the IMAQdx, and I'm waiting to hear back from him about what the cause of this issue might be. This is especially peculiar because you can open this file with another program using the same codec. I'm going to need a little time to pin this down, but I'll keep you up to date, and I'll check in no later than Monday.
All of the avi VI's draw a blank with an 'invalid avi session' error. The codec doesn't appear on the list from the 'get names' vi. I also downloaded a new motion jpeg avi codec and installed it but it made no difference.
I have a few follow up questions for you. First, are you using 64-bit LabVIEW? Secondly, you mentioned that when you use the "Get Filter Names" that the codec you are using is not included on that list. What names do you see on that list? It sounds like from what you said that you know specifically what codec that you should be using to decode this file. What codec is that? Also, could you post a short one second or so video in that file format and post to the forum so we can take a look at it?
It looks to me like either the codec you are using isn't being recognized by LabVIEW either because it isn't compatible or because for some reason LabVIEW isn't seeing that the codec is installed. One final question, do you have a choice on your camera to use a different codec or is that a hardware issue on your camera?
The labview is 32bit 2011. As I have said before the codec is 'Motion JPEG' (see attachment). Please google 'Motion JPEG avi codec' to see that a number of manufacturers have resurrected this codec for use with video capable still cameras. The file runs on media player, VLC, movie maker etc.
I was able to open the AVI file you posted without any errors using the Read AVI Example.vi from the Example Finder. Is the .avi file you sent directly from your camera or did you run this .avi file through your other software and encode this file with a different codec?
My codec list is much shorter than yours, but does include the generic "MJPEG Compressor" codec that you also have on your list. I'm not totally sure why you are having problems opening this file with your software. Can you try to open the file using the example above and let us know if you are still getting that error?
Sorry still no go. Please fine screen dump of error message attached. I have checked that my XP SP3 is up to date. I also tried to open one of the demo avi's 'Flame' without success. This was running the example not my code.
It turns out that the problem is with the universities MOE. I installed Vs11 on a stand alone PC also running XP SP3 and the avi example worked first go. I don't know what our IT dudes have done when they built the MOE but at least I can use my stand alone to write my vision software. Thanks heaps for your help.
I'm not sure why it's not working and couldn't find info on it. I tried to attach the failed export video but it won't upload on this site. The animation is just a basic bouncing ball animation with 4 different balls with varied weight however when I export it with a transparent background, the exported video only opens with VLC (from my installed video players) and freezes on first frame. It works when I export with solid colour background but I want transparency so I can continue editing background in Davinci.
I exported the stretchyman example project with transparency checked and got this:
-stretchyman.mov
This plays in PotPlayer, but with a black background. It should have a transparent background in a player that supports it. Can you try it in Davinci or another player that should show the transparency?
The forum has a file limit and likely your video is too large. Maybe you can upload it elsewhere, though the most we can do is try to play it. FWIW, PotPlayer tends to work well and opens most files, I switched to it from VLC long ago.
Various video players seem to choke on some video files without reason, while others can play them just fine. It may be something about the resolution of the video from Spine, especially if it is very large. For stretchyman above, I set the size to 1920x1080.
I tried PotPlayer and it perfectly ran my video that wasn't working before, nonetheless I got a download link for you to check it: _animation.avi/file. I couldn't view or download your one, I just get an error message: "No video with supported format and MIME type found." Could you upload it using mediafire or another uploading service?
Btw Davinci is a video editing software, even though I can view the video in PotPlayer, for some peculiar reason I still can't import it into Davinci so it doesn't seem like the png format is compatible with many softwares/video player
Got your video, PotPlayer can play it as you say. I'm afraid I don't know why Davinci wouldn't be able to play it, especially being specifically for video editing! Do you have better luck with Davinci using MOV? The PNG and RAW encodings for MOV support transparency. RAW can be very large, though it is fast.
I loaded your stretchy man video into Davinci and it was smooth sailing, afterwards I tried rendering the animation as mov with png and some reason my ball bouncing animation also loads in now... not sure what changed! How do you make your file sizes so small by the way? Mine usually comes out at 100 mb and I noticed yours are tiny in comparison.
