Hello fellow artists,

I think the first order of business we need to attend to is defining
an overall style for the game so that we can branch off and work on
our own ideas. Do you like cartoony, realistic, somewhere in the
middle? Let's hear your ideas. Even if you are not an artist, please
feel free to contribute- we just might not listen to you :)

I think at least early on, a cartoony style would be a good fit, since
it starts with things being cheerier and not quite as messed up. I
suppose you could also add realistic elements in there at some places
to clash with the cartoon stuff and create a disconnect between the
character and what's going on around him.

I agree. Google for World of Goo if you have a second; it's a fun
little game and I really love the look and feel of it. I think
something along those lines would be perfect for the beginning of the
game. It would be really bright and cheery like you said and would
make a good segue if we later wanted to incorporate realistic
elements.

next time I see you.

I'm sorry I couldn't make the meeting on Friday, I had a small family
emergency (everything's fine now, though). Does anyone have anything
finished at this stage? I would really like to start seeing some more
art. If you have any questions or want some feedback please email me
or text me! Also, I am at school every day so if you want to meet in
person send me a message and we can meet up.

-Hannah, how are the menus coming along?
-Lily, are you designing the main character?
-Charles, can I see your forest map when you are finished?

I think that's about it for now!

Yea, check the google code site the latest version is up for
download. Kyle gave me a list of a few changes to the tall grass
textures to help them line up a little bit. I also have a fire spell
being worked on that mostly everyone else saw ut wont be ready for
awhile. The sheet looked pretty good on the playable Viridian Forest
map we have, but Im going to replace the trees with custom stuff.
Going to be working on the Candyland area soon as well. Not going to
work on buidling til theyre needed, someone will prbably need to draw
those up at some point.

Anyway, the Forest map probably isnt going to be finished for awhile,
theres probably going to be lots of fine tuning as the game
progresses, as I need to tailor them to the needs of the map, but its
end product isnt going to look much different from what it is now.
Candyland I have planned to be less detailed, with lollipop grass,
pink tiles, candycane fences, that kind of stuff. Dont know what Im
doing with the water yet though, and someones going to have to draw
some buildings.

Also, should add that one of the textures changed most was #18 from a
little piece of grass to full grass, but it doesnt line up well with
other grass, so Kyle has asked me to change numbers 19 20 and 21 so
that we can work them into the Viridian Forest, because the grass
needs a more cohesive look. I am also goign to change the shading on
the base grass tile to try and prevent repeated placings of it look,
well, repetitive. I cant really do much more on anythign else though
until the character is resized next week, at which point I will
determine tree sizes. I also am going to redo the signs, as they
appear often in Viridian. Once, entire map is combined into 1 in a
few days I will really have a better view of what needs to be done.
Hopefully us on the level design team can get that done this
weekend.

Hopefully the texture map will pretty much be finalized by next week
as well.

Chris has asked me to take a shot at drawing the main character. I got
his design pretty much done, but I still need to draw up some sort of
sprite we could actually test out. I can post my concept sketches for
Jack later tonight if anyone wants to see them. In the meantime, I'm
working on icons for items before I move on to sprite stuff. I'll post
those icons when I have them done, too.

right now.

Ditto, I would really like to see your sketches, especially before you
start inking or coloring it! :)

Hey artists/Charles,
I discovered a quick way to make tiles in GIMP:

1. Check "Show Grid" and "Snap to Grid", and make the grid 64x64.
2. Color in a square however you like, and then select the square.
3. Go to Filters > Map > Make Seamless
4. Tessellate as needed.

Alright, here are the concepts I showed Chris.

http://i51.tinypic.com/d5wk6.jpg

Jack's got a gray hoodie, jeans, and brown boots. My idea was that as
he goes crazier throughout the game, his hair goes from an emover to a
complete train-wreck, and his hoodie gets covered with more and more
straps. Chris said that Jack will be getting more sane as the game
goes on, though, so the whole thing'll just go in reverse.

http://i56.tinypic.com/f4e5b7.jpg

For when Jack's sanity is totally gone (only during battle? I'm not
totally sure on how this will go down), his hood goes up everything
inside goes black, except for the two white eyes and solid white
smile. Sorta like a Cheshire Cat thing. At the bottom is an idea for
an attack, where Jack lifts up his hood and fires out his face like a
Bullet Bill.

As for how I'm going to draw this as a sprite, I'm still thinking
about it. Trying to pin down a style and all that. I'm making him
64x64 for the maps, so he'll be half the size the sprite in the game
is now. That should make him look a little better compared to the
trees.

I think he will look great, but just remember that a lot of details
get lost in sprites.
