Mind altering drug

Gentlefolk,
Memory is failing me., I have a recollection of a novel with a
Parisian setting, with I think Liam Devlin as the Hero/antihero, a
mind altering drug is used where the victim walks into the Seine and
drowns himself/herself, I have a vaguememory of a Columbian drug
called "Bundungarunga" (did I get the spelling right??) Can anybody
tell me the name of the n ovel, and does anyone have any knowledge of
the drug, have searched the internet but can find no refeferences.
Does this drug exist ...It maybe a member of the curare group of
drugs, I am compiling a dissertation on mind altering drugs and
wqondered if this one really exists.
