The hero was Sean Egan. His uncle was Jack Shelley, supposedly a
retired villain. The arch villain was a voice on the telephone named
Smith. Smith manipulated a heroin trade which originated in Paris,
overseen by Jago, and operated there by Agnes and Valentin. The heroin
is transported to England within the hollowed out corpses of drowned
addicts that are sent to the Deepdene crematorium. The heroin is
removed from the corpses, and finds its way to Ulster, where it funds
the weapons of an ultra-virulent and vicious Protestant organization
run by an untouchable retired judge.
Smith turns out to be Jack Shelley, who claimed he eschewed drugs. The
American woman heroine finally kills Shelley, and Tony Villiers and
Brigadier Ferguson are on hand to witness the final act as Jago tips
into the Thames after being shot by Shelley. Jago is wearing a
wonderful bulletproof waistcoat, and surfaces at the end and exits the
story. We are left knowing he can resurface in another adventure.
Sean Egan, Jago, Tony Villiers and Ferguson are all wonderful
characters who can be reused by Higgins as needed.
