Dear Rasika,

Not every social movement begins with a social programme. Some begin with a song, a stage and a cultural connection. Unnati has an unusual origin story. Most social organisations organise cultural events to raise funds for their causes. Our journey was the other way around.

SGBS Trust began as an organisation dedicated to promoting art and culture. Over time, our connection with society led us to recognise deeper social challenges. At a time when short-term vocational courses with a clear pathway to employment were almost non-existent, the idea of Unnati emerged. That idea became a mission.

Unnati grew into a movement focused on enabling underprivileged youth with skills and livelihoods. To take this work forward with greater focus and scale, SGBS Unnati Foundation, a Section 8 company, was established. In the last few years, Unnati has directly touched the lives of over 4 lakh youth and continues to work towards creating meaningful livelihood opportunities for thousands more. Yet, while Unnati has grown in scale, we have never forgotten our roots. Our first love for art and culture continues to remain a part of who we are. The artists, performers and cultural community who have been associated with us over the years remain an integral part of this journey.

The Utsav celebrations are our way of staying connected to those roots — celebrating creativity, community and the spirit of togetherness. We invite you to join us and be part of this celebration.
