GONE TOO SOON!
Professor Joseph Ugbodaga Igietseme, a member of the ANOG family, died peacefully in his sleep. JUI was born in Agenebode, Edo State, Nigeria, on February 17, 1955. He Graduated with a bachelor's degree from the University of Nigeria in Nsukka, Nigeria, in 1980, and a doctorate from Georgetown University in Washington, DC, in 1987.
Professor Igietseme is a well-known scientist at the Center for Disease Control (CDC) in Atlanta, Georgia, where he has worked on numerous life-saving projects that have helped to prevent the spread of diseases that would otherwise have crippled people all over the world. In 2002, he was named Chief of the Molecular Pathogenesis Laboratory at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in Atlanta, Georgia, United States. Dr. Igietseme has held adjunct professorships at Morehouse School of Medicine and Emory Medical School in Atlanta, Georgia, United States. He was proud of the fact that he had personally trained/mentored over 20 Ph.D. & M.S. degree holders in his laboratory since 1990.
In our community, Dr. Igietseme is renowned as a "Man of the People." Dr. Igietseme was a member of multiple local and international organizations (Founding Member, NIDO Americas, Atlanta Chapter, Afenmai Association of Georgia, Founding member & former Chairman, NICORE, Inc, etc.), both social and professional. In 2015, he was nominated for and received the ANOG Image & Service Awards. Dr. Igietseme dedicated his ANOG Image Award to "All Believers in Personal Sacrifices for Community and Societal Advancement" in his acceptance speech. He was a member of the ANOG Advisory Board as well.
Dr. Igietseme is survived by 3 Children – Gabriel, Nene and Jojackson. We pray that the Almighty would maintain his family, relatives, and friends in good spirits as they recall JUI's amazing life and times.
