For more flexibility, you should be installing packages from source (i.e., using tar.gz files), not zip files.
For R installation under Linux (including Ubuntu), you can follow the very detailed instructions under "Download R for Linux" on your favorite R mirror site. This will help you install R-core and R-dev to build packages from source files. Once you complete
the steps, install.packages( ) will be able to build most packages on CRAN from source (tar.gz files). If you set up the suggested repos on the CRAN page, R updates will be installed automagically on your system whenever a new R stable version appears.
