Dear all,

in June 2026, Michael Schaub and I are going to teach a 5-day Bayesian modeling workshop at the University of Debrecen, Hungary:

Bayesian occupancy, N-mixture and population modelling using NIMBLE and JAGS

The workshop will contain a gentle introduction to Bayesian inference and computation, focusing on the two software products that we think currently have the best tradeoff between user-friendliness and power and flexibility. Thus, we will use JAGS and NIMBLE to fit and understand some of the most widely used models for the analysis of animal and plant populations. Models and topics include:

  • GLMs and generalized linear mixed models
  • Site-occupancy models
  • N-mixture models
  • State-space models
  • Cormack-Jolly-Seber models
  • Multistate capture-recapture models
  • Advanced use of NIMBLE (e.g. use of nimble functions, MCMC configuration)
  • The joy of data simulation
  • General integrated and integrated population models (IPMs)
Debrecen can be easily reached from the capital Budapest via public transport or rental car, and Hungary has very much indeed to offer for vacationers, both 'traditional' and more bird or other nature-oriented. For instance, it is right next to the famous Hortobagy National Park.

Please send your application to Michael Schaub (michael...@vogelwarte.ch), with cc to Zoltán Németh (nemeth...@science.unideb.hu), describing your background and knowledge in statistical modelling, R and NIMBLE/JAGS, by 25 February 2026 at the latest.

Best regards  --- M & M

Dear Zoltan,

Thank you very much! I have included your suggestions and now we have the announcement that can be spread (attached is a doxc and a pdf version). I will post it on www.phidot.org (I will send you the link later) and circulate it on the hmecology list. Please also use your cannels to advertise the workshop widely. Then we will see, how large is the interest.

I have checked whether it is possible to install JAGS and NIMBLE on Linux, and according to the descriptions, this is possible for both. Though, Marc and I have no experience at all with Linux, so such users need to install the software on their own.

Best wishes

Michael

Dear Michael and Marc,

Thanks again for the draft workshop announcement document. It looks great, we only added a couple of minor suggestions including my contact info as we would like to monitor how much interest there is for the workshop and be able to decide on time whether to advertise more.

Question: Are JAGS and NIMBLE compatible with Linux? Quite a few researchers here work in that environment and do not have a laptop with  Windows OS.

Thanks again,

Zoltan

Betreff: Re: Workshop budget

Dear Michael,

Thank you for your input. I attached a detailed budget in which you can see the individual items. Based on your input, and after talking with Zoltan, I also updated the registration fee calculations. Now, it includes 3 tiers for 4 categories. Please let us know what you and Marc think. We have organized workshops before with internationally known instructors and our experience is that Western EU participation is relatively low (despite the lower costs), that is why (i.e., to not further discourage participation, as well as for fairness) we would prefer not to set a large gap among the different categories. Of course, you and Marc may have other reasons and we are open for further modifications.

Best wishes,

Zoltan

Dear Zoltan,

Thank you very much for this. Marc and I were wondering whether you have some details about the budget, i.e. some table where you have calculated it. For us this would be informative.

Regarding the workshop fees, we believe that we can (and should) charge participants from Western EU countries more. When we hold a workshop in Switzerland, we charge ~300 euros for students and ~600 euros for postdocs and above. Perhaps we could lower these prices slightly to reduce the difference between the Eastern and Western EU countries, but €200/€400 for students/postdocs seems appropriate to us (particularly since accommodation in Hungary is cheaper than in Western Europe). We also suggest lowering the price for Eastern EU participants to €50. If we then have 10 participants from the east and 10 from the west, the income will be at least €2,500, and Zoltan's losses will be smaller.

What are your thoughts on this?

Best wishes

Michael

Betreff: Workshop budget

Dear All,

Last time, we concluded our meeting with the agreement that us, local organizers, would come up with a preliminary budget by the end of September.

According to our calculations, the expected costs associated with the workshop will total around 4300 EUR, which includes room and catering costs for the workshop, as well as transport, accommodation, meals and per diem for Marc and Michael.

We propose a two-tier system for registration fees based on country of origin: 120 EUR for participants from Western EU countries and 60 EUR for Eastern EU ones.  We anticipate at least 10 participants from each of these regions, totalling  to approx. 1800 EUR.

The reamining costs will be covered by a grant from Zoltan Barta.

We also talked about  a preliiminary round of advertising in December and a follow up in January or February with a final decision to be made about the feasibility (financial viability) of the workshop in late March/early April.

Please let us know if this sounds reasonable and if you have any suggestions with regards to registration fee pricing or any other parts of the preparation.

Best wishes,

Zoltan
