However, dosbox is an essential application that I have to startxfce4 to use. Please tell me how to run it in the console. Its entirely commandline based, except the startup, so there must be some way?

P.S- My school uses the ultra-outdated turbo c++ compiler to teach the language. Its got some vendor dependant libraries (conio.h, graphics.h), so its necessary that I use dosbox to run it. If you can't help me with dosbox, then can you please tell me how to run tc.exe in the console. That'll do as well.

An alternative to starting WM/DE would be to use a customized .xinitrc with startx.
all you need to do is have exec dosbox in it instead of exec somewm .
This will start an X session that is exclusively used by/for dosbox .

The problem is solved and dosbox is running perfectly. Typing sudo dosbox DID open it in the console but messed up the keyboard (down arrow became enter, - became e or something). And doing exec dosbox in /.xinitrc opened it up too, but failed to detect my keyboard. So no commands typed, unable to exit, I had to do a hard reboot for both the cases. And I exported the SDL_VIDEODRIVER to fbcon and other things but that didn't work.

EDIT : I forgot to mention that the dosbox-0.74.conf has to be obtained in two ways. 1. Running dosbox from console and getting it hanged. Then you'll have to reboot and you'll find the file in /.dosbox (both the folder and file are automatically generated). This is NOT recommended.
2. Running dosbox in the X server. This also generates the file which you can copy to /root/.dosbox (create the folder if it doesn't exist). This is safe.

2) When i start dosbox as root, all the key bindings are absolutely wrong. My Enter key has been bound to 't' and my escape key hangs my machine. I cant even type exit.
I checked up the mapper.txt and found every key binding was screwed up, I corrected the mapper.txt and started dosbox with:

I have been trying repeatedly to copy the files of a cdrom to the c:windows directory. Since it is a large directory I do not want to individually copy each one but every time I try to use xcopy it does not work as it says it's an illegal command. I tried using help/all to look at the available commands but it is not there. I also tried getting a clean install and running as an admin but it still won't work. I am new to dosbox so any help would be appreciated.

Hello, when downloaded DOSBOX on a desktop, you can easily find the folder and see all the files in detail : dosbox.conf, dosbox.exe, xxxx.dll, xxxx.bat, manual.txt, etc. .. . We can therefore modify the file contents dosbox.conf.
When you upload aDosBox (application APK) on Samsung Galaxy S2 via ANDROID MARKET, aDosBox works perfectly, but I can not find files that I could see on my desktop and in particular the file dosbox.conf I would change a bit. Do you know where files are stored on a SmartPhone ? Thank you for your help. Sponti.

Actually, I managed to change the dosbox.conf and would like to share the process. The problem is that configuration file resides in directory unaccessible to Android user but accessible to DOSBox program.
1) Inside DOSBox, open the DOSBox dialog under the Menu and select "Save", take note of the path. In my case, it was "/data/data/org.hystudio.android.dosbox", lets assume that this is the case for all.
2) Inside DOSBox type: "mount d: /data/data/org.hystudio.android.dosbox".
3) Inside DOSBox type: "copy d:\files\dosbox1\dosbox1.con c:\dosbox.con".
4) Still inside DOSBox, open the DOSBox dialog again and save the config under db.conf.
5) Exit DOSBox and edit the 'dosbox.con' in location the C: was mounted to suit your needs.
6) Start DOSBox, mount D: to same location as earlier and type
"copy C:\dosbox.con d:\files\dosbox1\db1.con".
7) Inside DOSBox, open the DOSBox dialog and load configuration db.conf.
? Restart DOSBox - the new config should now be active.

Well, I did find DOSBox Staging. A newer fork of the DOSBox project: -staging/dosbox-staging. It DOES work with my A770 and my DOS games are working splendidly with it. The issues with the original DOSBox still stand and I'm willing to assist if you all at Intel would like to resolve the issues. But, in the meantime I guess I'll go with DOSBox Staging. Thanks!

Ty changing the output setting in the dosbox config file. For myself I found that the surface and overlay outputs had a tendency to cause problems, while the openlnb output seemed to work best for me.

The problem with using virtualbox is that you can't scale up the screen resolution. With dosbox you can set the scaler setting to "normal2x forced" letting you play the game in 1280x960 resolution, which makes a rather big difference on large monitors.

Helpful Tip: You can have DOSBox automatically mount a path on your portable device by editing your dosbox.conf file in the DOSBoxPortable\Data\settings directory and adding the following line to the end of the file (replacing PathOnMyDevice with the path you'd like to mount as your C drive): mount c \PathOnMyDevice
