Hey Arch-Core,

Saturday Angsuman and myself were able to sit down and discuss some of the proposals for the entertainment experience in the house.  We talked about the projector system and what would be needed vs. a standard (boring and less entertaining) television setup, as well as speaker options including exposed and wall-embedded systems.  Angsuman agreed to provide information on the cavity spaces required within the wall and ceiling envelopes so that a decision can be made as to whether or not that is even a feasible option.  There are a serious of architectural and aesthetic issues that I would like to discuss with architecture core on Monday Sept. 10th (tomorrow) to weed out some options we have been discussing.

There issues are as follows:

The projector system or no projector system?
If we use a television, how will we be mounting it/hiding the ugly beast.
Art on the east wall?
Speakers - mounted satellites or embedded speakers.  Performance/aesthetics.

There is more, but we can just sit down and I will pass along all the nitty gritties.

Team,
The wall cavity space required for speaker mounting is not that deep and provides a truly customized sound experience for the viewing space.  Considering the main room faces south with a significant amount of ambient light there will be shading required to view a projected image.  Regarding mounting of flat panel displays there are many very good mounts available that provide adjustability as well as cable management to hide all of those nasty wires. I would suggest that you select source components and display devices that have the ability to be IP controlled so that you can customize the experience for the occupants as well as to utilize these components to help tell the DesertSol story during the competition.
Regards,
Daniel

So I talked to Rick and he really does not want me to make custom speakers due to added layers of complexity. We can hide the front satellites but the rear satellites will most likely be exposed.

Go to the brochure for the speakers:

http://www.kef.com/uploads/files/en/kht_brochure_en.pdf

The model is KHT 2005.3 I think these are among the most attractive satellites out there. They're solid aluminum not cheap MDF with a veneer. They're quite small and I don't think they'd be too noticeable. The sub should be easily hidden within a cabinet somewhere.

Thanks.

Also, all wiring will be hidden in the walls. There is no issue with this.

Angsuman,

Let's assume that you don't make them.  Can you put together an estimate on what store bought embedded speakers would cost?  We would really like to be able to consider both options from a cost/performance viewpoint.

Thanks,
Westin

Sure Westin. I think we may have to get in-walls. Rick told me that even he found my speakers suggested ugly. Which surprised me. So here are some more systems to consider on the list for on-wall speakers. There's literally hundreds of manufacturers. I'm not sure what sort of aesthetic goal is there. Like if for some reason we have to have visible speakers are we going for a more modern electronic look? Or old fashioned wood look?

For In-walls I recommend these:

I've used them before. Honestly this might be the best option. All the specs are on the website. If you'd like feel free to use these dimensions to map out the cavities you'd need in the soffits. This might actually sound the best just because we can have relatively large speakers hidden, instead of dinky satellites. For the sub we can get any standalone sub that'll fit in the cabinet or we can get that in wall too although there might be vibration problems for the structure...So sub in cabinet is safer in that sense.

Let me know what you guys pick.

Oh and get this for the sub:

Easily hidden, small cheap. So the in-wall system with the sub would be $860.

I guess that'd be my final recommendation at this point. So everyone is happy.
