Hello,

Just some updates of what has come up this weekend:

+I will be working to add the structure for the deck and ramps to the model, and create a structural plan drawing so that we can use that to make call outs from for the structural details.

+Iani and his team will be working to develop structural plan & section details for the key connections below the decks and ramps.

+Also a decision to stack the screens on the southwestern most part of the private deck has been made, because with the new location of the solar thermal system on the south facade of the cool tower, will be difficult enough to construct and place without having a pocket made for the screens. Structures is looking into this added weight load on the deck for their member sizes.

+The water tanks will be stored below the decking and the south planter. This includes the potable water tank which will hold 1500 gallons. Jesse understands where this will happen, and Paul (mechanical) is working on custom water tanks to fit the specific dimensions which we can fit below the deck. It will probably be located between the 2 footings closest to the livingroom module, and will be about 24 feet long. The 2 tanks are the 700 gallon greywater tank, which will likely go below the planter, and the 300 gallon blackwater tank which will probably go under the "main entrance deck"

+ Design of Cool Tower has one 3'by3' outlet opening on east elevation facing the public deck, which runs from 1 inch above finished floor level to 3' 1" off the finished floor height. This is to allow for theheight from the center of the opening to the top of the Cool Tower to be 6' 5" which is the maximum efficiency height.

Issues that need attention:

+ solar thermal needs a 20% angle vertically, to be able to gain the most heat from the sun during the cooler months. This means we need to adjust the planter on the south deck behind the cool tower. Also structures will have to look at the support for this but I think it may be mostly resting on or close to the ground. Kim is determining about what size the solar thermal needs to be.

+ We need to make a decision on deck material. I think the sun damage that can happen with the composite materials is worse, than the maintenance of the wood. That being said I have read from a few different sources that Redwood is a better wood to use in this climate than cedar or ipe. I will probably decide this on Monday, once I discuss it with the rest of the Core team.

+ Detailing this week and delegating which details my team will need to work on. With assistance from Prof. Weber and Structures ( and probably Nathan) lol

That is all for now from Exterior..... more problems to come... ;-)

I think the flexible drinking water tank is a good option for under deck storage. I worked with them before. They called 'Pillow Tank".

We've been advised not to use the flexible tanks by the 2009 Ohio State team, which had a failure in their tank, which was one of the flexible tanks.
