We have generated hCal and ics events output from our old calendar,
but have not done any investigation on writing code to import into the
system.
I was hoping some one had added the feature to the unl event system
since it seems like it could be a useful to to get university groups
to easily switch from other calendar systems.

I would really like to see this as a supported feature. Allowing
subscriptions to ics files would be a big win.
Since the IMC vCalendar/iCalendar format is a bit of a mess to deal
with, I've seen a few implementations where they simply convert the
ics data to xml and then use something such as SimpleXML to parse the
details.
For example -

Maybe that will give you some ideas.
Once an ICS parser or ics->xml and a xml parser can be written,
importing the events should be a piece of cake. I'd then like to see
the 'subscriptions' table expanded to support this type of
subscription using the 'timeperiod' field as the monitor interval. We
may also need to add a field which defines what type of subscription
each record in the database pertains to, and write a
harvester/subscription interface for each type of subscription.
