Hello All,

I hope everyone had a wonderful summer. Our student chapter is gearing up for another busy semester. Please check out events that we're hosting or supporting over the next few weeks. We hope to see you soon!

In this email:

1. General Interest UB Lawyers Guild meeting, Sept. 17,  5 p.m., Room 5
2. NLG  "Law for the People" National Conference, October 15-19, Detroit, MI
3. PUSH Rally for Jobs and Housing October 8th, 4-6 p.m. Lafayette Sq.
4. The Movement: Dance Party/Fundraiser, 10/3, Langston Hughes Cultural Center

1.UB Lawyers Guild General Interest Meeting
Wednesday September 17th, 5 p.m.
Room 5

The National Lawyers Guild is the nation's oldest and largest public interest lawyers association. Our chapter seeks to unite progressive law students, lawyers and community activists to build an effective movement for social change. Our intro meeting will feature a short overview of our group, our plans and ideas for the semester, and a screening of a 20 minute film by the ACLU on the "War on Drugs." There will be pizza. More information about the Guild at
www.nlg.org and our chapter at www.ublg.blogspot.com. Also visit our table in the lobby on Wednesday Sept. 17th.

If you can't make our intro meeting, our weekly meetings will be every Wednesday at 5 p.m., room 5. Email
ublg...@gmail.com with any questions.

2. National Lawyers Guild Conference
October 15-19
Detroit, Michigan

This year's conference promises to be as exciting and inspiring as the last! Major panels include speakers on labor, alternatives to prison proliferation, problems of inner-city displacement, trangender issues, and a panel on the Arab and Middle Eastern communities of Detroit.

Last year, five of us proudly represented Buffalo at the conference -- we even made our presence known on the dance floor! Let's do it again, Buffalo! More information and registration information at www.nlg.org. If you would like to go, please let us know as soon as possible by emailing ublg...@gmail.com . We have some funding for registration, a van, and gas. Housing will be free and arranged by the Guild if we tell them how many students are attending in advance. The plan at the moment is to leave on Thursday, October 15th in the evening and return on Sunday afternoon. We would like to drive through Canada, which would require everyone to have a passport or birth certificate. If that's a problem, let us know.

3. PUSH Rally for Jobs and Housing
October 8, 4-6 p.m.
Lafayette Square

PUSH is gathering people from across Buffalo to let City Hall know we won't wait another day for its Anti-Poverty Platform to be adopted. We know the Platform is the right way to go because community problems need community generated solutions. Please come join us and let the City know that caring about its neighborhoods means putting people first. PUSH has asked the UB Lawyers Guild to provide legal observation. If you would like to be a legal observer at the rally, let us know by emailing ublg...@gmail.com. Individuals who attended the legal observation training last semester are encouraged to test out their skills. The rally is currently permitted; no civil disobedience is expected.

4. The Movement Dance Party
October 3, 8 p.m. - 2 a.m.
Langston Hughes (Main and High)
$5 at the door

Looking to improve on the Buffalo's current options for dancing to real music, leaders of the local progressive nonprofit community have come together to found The Movement.

Come out on October 3rd to experience the first Movement party at Langston Hughes, near Main and High Streets. If you've been looking for a spot to enjoy danceable underground hip-hop and soulful beats, you're not alone.

The Movement seeks to raise Buffalo's movement consciousness while providing a space to DANCE! Veteran DJ's Cutler and LoPro will provide the backbone, and special guests will play backup.

Nonprofit sponsors include Buffalo First, Buffalo Reuse, PUSH Buffalo, MAP, the Coalition for Economic Justice and Ujima Theater. Proceeds will benefit the PPG--a network of social change groups in Buffalo--as well as the Massachusetts Avenue Project.
