My Friends,
Next week is the unofficial UB Lawyers Guild Week.
We have three events going on and would love to see you at all of them.
Please see them below and if you have any questions, let us know (ublg...@gmail.com).
As a reminder, our meetings are weekly, every Wednesday at 5pm in room 5 (the basement).
We are always looking for new input and ideas, so come on down next week to our meeting!
Also, check out our super amazing blog at www.ublg.blogspot.com.  Hope to see you next week!

In this e-mail:

*1. Screening of "The Forgotten City", November 19th, Wednesday, Rm.108 at 6p.m.*
*2. BAKE SALE, O'Brian Lobby, November 18th, Tuesday 9-4.*
*3. Tour of Buffalo Non-Profits, Friday November 21st, 12:30pm-3pm*

*1. Screening of "The Forgotten City", November 19th, Wednesday, Rm.108 at 6p.m.*
Food and Drink will be provided, as well as intriguing discussion following the movie.  Please see the description.

**The Forgotten City is a soul stirring documentary taking place in Buffalo, New York, exploring race relations, segregation, crime, and politics.

This film is a personal journey of two young filmmakers who forged an unlikely partnership following a 2001 murder; one a friend of the victim and the other a friend of the murderer. Instead of waging war, they embarked on a documentary film project that would take them into the heart of Buffalo's most dispossessed communities and crime ridden streets. The result of their exploration is a documentary film with a raw, hard-hitting, and unblinking first-hand look at the way some live in America. This film brings to light the racial turmoil and economic hardships that have become the lifestyle of so many living in Buffalo's inner city.

The Forgotten City, however, is not simply a film about the problems that plague Buffalo's inner city; it can easily be the story of any American city and is a film that everyone should see.

The movie will be followed by a discussion about race and poverty in the City of Buffalo, lead by Carl Nightingale, Associated Professor of American Studies, and Jim Anderson, Chair of Citizen Action of WNY.**

*2. BAKE SALE, O'Brian Lobby, November 18th, Tuesday 9-4.*

Next Tuesday the Lawyers Guild will be offering the finest in brownies, cookies, cakes, and rice krispie treats.  Be sure to stop by and fill your desire for sweets.  Tell all your friends, classmates, and professors!

*3. Tour of Buffalo Non-Profits, Friday November 21st, 12:30pm-3pm*

Friday, November 21st, the Lawyers Guild will be touring various non-profit groups in Buffalo with legal connections.  The tour is being conducted with the goal of exposing the non-traditional organizations for legal work, as well as developing a better connection between the community of Buffalo and its law school.  For those that are interested in attending, please e-mail ublg...@gmail.com.  We will be meeting in the O'Brian Lobby at 12:30pm.  Here are the organizations we will be visiting:

VIVE, Inc. - VIVE provides food, shelter, clothing, healthcare and legal services to refugees as they await their appointment to enter Canada or their U.S. asylum hearing.

Coalition for Economic Justice (CEJ) - CEJ's goals are (1) to organize support for workers treated unjustly or illegally in the workplace and (2) to address the root causes of poverty while working for economic policies that benefit the entire community.

Western NY Peace Center - The Peace Center's overarching activism and education efforts focus on organizing a local response to global violence and human rights concerns (especially in response to the impacts of U.S. policy on international "hot zones" in the Middle East, Latin America and Africa), the Peace Center is similarly dedicated to enriching the quality of life of our local community through awareness-raising and direct service.

*Thanks for reading this all the way through, you are appreciated!*

Lawyers Guild Gangstas,
I forgot to mention one additional event to the tour. In
addition to the groups we will be visiting on Friday, we will be
visiting Buffalo ReUse on Saturday morning at 9am. Buffalo ReUse is a
local organization that salvages reusable materials from soon to be
demolished homes. They are a very green company. If you would like
to attend the tour, please let Beth know. Her e-mail address is
paci...@buffalo.edu. Hope to see you at our bake sale, watching the
Forgotten City, or on our Buffalo Non-Profits Tour. Thanks for not
deleting without reading!
