you can check the velocity of the hand and when you see a rapid decrease in velocity at the end of a sequence of high velocity cause the object to go flying in a direction of the average velocity just before the rapid deceleration.
you could also check for the hand to be in a user-relative bounding box where the hand must be for the throw to be detected.
best throwing mechanic would make for a good "zigfu challenge" :-)
