Hey Guys,
With all the action on the group today I am reminded that I meant to
post this last week when I got it, but have been crazy busy here so my
apologies, and here you go:
Anyhow, Mat from Allegorithmic (the guys who do the substance texture
generation tools) sent me some demos of this new thing they are
working on called Smart Tiling.
From Mat:
-----
Smart Tiling uses a concept similar to Wang Tiles to generate no
repeating textures from a set of tiles, in this case 16. This means
that you can create a very natural looking terrain for example from
only a small amount of texture data......the demo has been implemented
in Unity but works in any engine, or even 3dsmax for example.....
Check out the demo below:
https://www.yousendit.com/download/T2djb245R0YrV3hBSXNUQw
• The basic element is a 1024x1024pixel block.
• The Smart Tiling filter creates 16 256x256 pixel tiles from
this block which are combined to create a texture that does not
repeat.
• There is an Enable Switch on the top left which turns the
Smart Tiling on and off
• The slider across the bottom controls the overall texture
size, 1k in the left most position and 32k in the right most position.
See the effect clearly by turning the Smart Tiling on and off.
Smart Tiling only needs 1k video memory to generate a 32k texture.
Smart Tiling doesn’t requires any runtime integration, it uses a
custom shader that we provide.

and here is a mac demo:

They all look pretty good, and you can see that the algorythm works
better for some things. But the most amazing one is the limestone
blocks IMHO.
Anyhow, pretty cool stuff. I have been playing with similar ideas in
my free time, but these guys are the experts.
I asked Mat about licensing etc and they haven't sorted it out yet as
it is so new. But if you are interested don't hesitate to contact him
directly:
