Hi folks, bit of  basic one this, I know, but is confisung the hell out of me.

I have 2 issues (sometimes) when importing graphics.

1. I have created a basic cube shape which I am using as a wall in my game. On this I have added a material which is a stone/brick effect. There are 4 of these walls and some of them, when I run the game, flicker while playing. Not all, but always the same one. Any idea on what might be the issue?

2. As far as I can gather the scale in Unity is 1 unit = 1 metre. However if I import a 3D graphic, say a bowl of fruit, which the graphic program says is 30cm wide, it comes in as a massive object, more like 15m. The scale on the imported obect is set to 1 so it's not that. Generally also, any imported objects have the same issue as above, flickering on the screen.

thanks
Paul

Sounds like a normals issue. If objects are in front of other objects it tries to render the two of them. I usually deal with it by making sure no two objects share the same space, like wall detail layers, and that all the normals are facing the right way in the 3d program(I use Blender). What program are you importing from?

Thanks Shane, that makes some sense.

the main wall that is causing me a problem is the one with a door, so probably the door is overlapping a bit. I'll try re-sizing and see if that sorts it and if it does, I'll be more careful with my placement/sizing.

Not sure how I can resolve this though with other objects, there will always be one in front of another, e.g., object with a wall behind it. It's not an issue in any of the sample tutorials I've seen so a bit lost with that (I am very new to all this).

I've been trying out various 3D packages but have had the same result with all.

Cheers
Paul

Some 3D packages have a way of exporting specific to Unity, but ive never found them to work.

if you click on the model to bring the asset options up in the inspector you can change the scale there.
and if you are taking it in from the same 3D modelling program each time, each model you import will be off by the same scale, so you can adjust it there.

Theres also a bunch of normal options there further down you can play with in case it is a problem with  the normals of your model. sometimes unity will do funny things with the normals when they are imported.
but if the wall goes tessellated when your moving past it, it most likely that theres somthing directly behind it.
