Hello.  We have an interesting scenario for fall in which we would like to assign a specific group of 20-30 students to one specific section of a course.  There are 3 section in total.  I have been using the student solver to assign schedules for incoming students which includes this course.  The solver has been working well for this so far, but I'm wondering if there is some kind of section level variable that can be assigned to both a section and a student to control what section the solver places students into when there are multiple sections of the same course.  Another way to explain our goal is that we are creating cohorts for the entering class.    For this one specific course we don't want the cohorts to mix.

I could see one possibility would be to only run those 20-30 students through the solver in one run and only make that one section an option.  Once those students are fully scheduled we run the others through in a second run.  Still this may limit options of how students are placed in other courses.

Another idea would be if we could schedule this one course's 3 sections placing the students as then need to be placed and then run the solver creating the remainder of the schedules, but not touching that one section.  I'm not totally sure how to do this though to ensure the solver just doesn't change things.

I'm curious if you have any suggestions how we should go about this.  Thanks!
David

Hi David,

If you put the students in a student group (Administration > Academic Sessions > Student Groups), you can create a student group reservation (Courses > Input Data > Reservations) to reserve a specific section of a course for this student group.

Best regards,

Tomas

Thanks Tomas.  Just wanted to follow up to update that this approach worked for us.  The group of students were put into a student group and then using the group reservation attached to the specific section, the Unitime Solver placed that group of students into the one section of the course.  I'm so grateful this functionality exists and worked well for our situation.  Thanks!!
