MESSAGE OF PRIME MINISTER THE HONOURABLE MRS KAMLA PERSAD-BISSESSAR, SC, MP ON THE OCCASION OF PALM SUNDAY 2026

Today, Christians across Trinidad and Tobago and around the world observe Palm Sunday, marking the beginning of Holy Week, the most sacred period in the Christian calendar.

Palm Sunday commemorates the entry of Jesus Christ into Jerusalem, welcomed with palm branches and cries of “Hosanna” (Matthew 21:9).

Yet He came not as a conqueror but as a humble King, fulfilling prophecy (Zechariah 9:9) and declaring, “My kingdom is not of this world” (John 18:36). In this, we are reminded that His mission was not power but peace, sacrifice, and redemption.

The same city that welcomed Him would soon call for His crucifixion (Matthew 27:22), a stark reminder of how quickly support can turn to silence when the moment becomes difficult.

Palm Sunday, therefore, challenges us to hold firm to what is right, not only in times of joy but especially when it requires courage and conviction.

In Trinidad and Tobago, these reflections are deeply relevant. Ours is a nation grounded in faith, enriched by diversity, and sustained by mutual respect. The Christian community has, for generations, helped shape our national life through service, education, compassion, and moral leadership.

The values reflected in this sacred season — humility, forgiveness, discipline, and care for others — continue to strengthen our society and anchor our shared sense of purpose.

As Holy Week begins, I urge all who observe to pause, reflect, and renew their commitment to the principles that guide us.

Let this not be only a remembrance of what Christ endured, but a recommitment to how we live. Let us not only proclaim Him in word, but reflect Him in action, in how we treat one another, how we serve, and how we uphold what is right.

On behalf of the Government and people of Trinidad and Tobago, I extend sincere wishes for a peaceful, blessed, and spiritually enriching Holy Week.

May this sacred season bring renewed faith, strength of character, and abiding grace to all. And may God’s continued blessings rest upon every family and guide our nation in peace, unity, and purpose.
