UNC WOMEN’S ARM CONDEMNS
DISGRACEFUL AND MISOGYNISTIC ATTACK ON PRIME MINISTER KAMLA PERSAD-BISSESSAR
The UNC National Women’s Arm condemns in the strongest possible terms the vile, disrespectful and misogynistic comments made by Nyan Gadsby Dolly in a social media post directed at Prime Minister The Honourable Kamla Persad-Bissessar, SC.
The language used in this post is not only disgraceful but deeply offensive to women everywhere. To refer to a sitting Prime Minister and a woman who has dedicated decades of service to the people of Trinidad and Tobago in such demeaning and abusive terms reflects a shocking level of political desperation and moral bankruptcy.
This type of conduct has no place in civil discourse. It undermines respectful democratic engagement and sends a disturbing message about the treatment of women in leadership. Disagreeing with a political position is one thing; resorting to crude insults, ageist remarks and degrading language is something entirely different and completely unacceptable.
Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar has spent her life breaking barriers for women in Trinidad and Tobago and across the Caribbean. She remains a symbol of strength, leadership and service. Attempts to demean her will not diminish her record nor the respect she commands locally and internationally.
The UNC Women’s Arm calls on Nyan Gadsby Dolly to immediately retract these offensive remarks and issue a public apology to the Prime Minister and to the women of Trinidad and Tobago.
We also call on all leaders and members of the Opposition to distance themselves from this shameful attack and to recommit to a standard of political discourse that respects women and upholds the dignity of public office.
The people of Trinidad and Tobago deserve better than this gutter-level politics.
The UNC Women’s Arm stands firmly with Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar and will continue to defend the dignity of women in public life.
