STATEMENT BY THE PRIME MINISTER, THE HONOURABLE MRS KAMLA PERSAD-BISSESSAR, SC, MP, ON THE HISTORIC ELECTORAL VICTORY OF PRIME MINISTER MIA AMOR MOTTLEY AND BARBADOS LABOUR PARTY (BLP) IN THE BARBADOS GENERAL ELECTIONS OF FEBRUARY 11, 2026

On behalf of the Government and people of Trinidad and Tobago, I extend my heartfelt congratulations to Prime Minister Mia Amor Mottley on her historic third consecutive victory in the February 11, 2026, General Elections in Barbados, a milestone that reflects the strength of her leadership and the confidence of the Barbadian people.

I also extend sincere congratulations to the Barbados Labour Party on its decisive electoral success, as well as the people of Barbados, on a peaceful and decisive democratic exercise.

This renewed mandate reflects the deep confidence of the Barbadian people in Prime Minister Mottley’s leadership, and in the vision, record, and achievements of the BLP. Her resounding victory stands as a powerful affirmation of trust earned and leadership proven.

To secure a third consecutive landslide mandate is an exceptional accomplishment and a testament to her steadfast commitment to national development, resilience, and progress in a rapidly changing global environment.

This moment carries added meaning in light of the longstanding personal and professional friendship Prime Minister Mottley and I have shared over decades.

Our association was forged early in our careers as Caribbean attorneys and strengthened through collaboration on regional legal matters, including our 2009 engagement in Saint Kitts and Nevis in support of a constitutional challenge brought by the then Opposition People’s Action Movement. That experience reflected our shared respect for constitutional governance and the rule of law across the Caribbean.

Over the years, our bond has deepened as contemporaries in political leadership, serving as Prime Ministers of our respective nations, united by common democratic values and a shared responsibility to advance the interests of our peoples and strengthen Caribbean unity.

Barbados also holds a special place in my own journey. In the early 1980s, I lived in Barbados while pursuing my legal studies at the Cave Hill Campus of the University of the West Indies.

During that formative period, I was profoundly touched by the strength, intelligence, discipline, and diligence of the Barbadian people. Those years instilled in me an enduring respect and affection for Barbados and shaped my appreciation for its national character.

I also recall with deep appreciation Prime Minister Mottley’s presence at my swearing-in ceremony in Parliament following the UNC’s resounding victory in the April 28, 2025, General Elections in Trinidad and Tobago. That gesture reflected not only personal goodwill but also the enduring and unbreakable ties between Trinidad and Tobago and Barbados as sister nations within CARICOM.

Indeed, the relationship between our two countries remains rooted in shared history, culture, commerce, and regional solidarity. Together, we continue to advance food and energy security, climate resilience, economic integration, and a stronger, more influential Caribbean voice on the global stage.

Furthermore, I wish Prime Minister Mottley and her Government ongoing guidance, wisdom, and strength as they serve their nation, fostering continued progress and stability for Barbados.

May the Government and people of Barbados, and the Barbadian nation itself, be endowed with enduring peace, sustained prosperity, and abundant success. And may God always bless Prime Minister Mottley and the people of Barbados with security, progress, and happiness.
