Cross this Way!
This spring, the New York City Department of Transportation (DOT) released “Cross This Way,” a dynamic new video that highlights street safety tips for students in grades four through six. The video features students from Brooklyn, Manhattan and Queens and incorporates hip hop music and dance to make the learning fun and memorable.
The video focuses on three of the most common scenarios in which children ages 5-14 are injured crossing the street. A checklist of tips for kids to protect themselves is featured after each scenario: crossing in the crosswalk with the signal; crossing at a stop sign; mid-block crossing. Through these realistic scenarios and a playbook that helps the audience re-cap what went wrong, children are encouraged to make the right choice every time they cross.
- The video reminds children to stop on the curb and look both ways before they cross and to continue looking for turning vehicles as they cross.
- Making eye contact with drivers before crossing is especially important at unsignalized intersections.
- When crossing mid-block, pedestrians stop at the edge of parked cars and look both ways to be sure no traffic is coming on the block.
- Everyone should keep their heads up and put their phone away before crossing.
The topics covered in the video are aligned with Mayor de Blasio’s Vision Zero initiative, which charged DOT to boost its education and outreach efforts to help make streets safer for everyone, especially children, who are among the most vulnerable pedestrians.
