While social media is great. I believe I heard about 2/3 of adults use
social media. However, people have to be made aware of places like
this. So I'm thinking of something a little old fashion. I'm thinking
of physically dropping of a hard copy pamphlet/letter what have you in
people's mailbox/door. Thoughts? I have a rough draft that can be seen
here http://www.facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=110354829090458&set=a.110352939090647.8845.102748546517753&type=1&ref=nf

Note, I'm not a professional marketer or anything like that. So any
comments would be welcomed.

Actually, that's a pretty good idea. One thing people could also do is
go to public spaces (in DC, the metro is a pretty good spot for this)
and hand out fliers, or post them up on public bulletin boards (cafes
and universities would be good for this).

It might be good to also put our contact information on there (or the
contact for whoever is in charge of organizing) so they'll know who to
contact in the area if they want to get involved.

Hi, Mike,

I think your idea to make flyers available to people is a good one. The only thing I would caution you to do is make sure it's legal in your state to put non-Postal Service correspondence in people's mailboxes. I know that here in FL it is NOT legal to do that, but you CAN tape it to the outside of the mailbox. You just can't put it inside.

Aside from that, great idea, and best of luck with it!

That is another good idea.

Anyone know of a cheap way to produce copies? I briefly looked into
Staples. It was about $0.50 a page.

You could look at libraries or university comp centers. They often
have decent rates. $.50 is too much, and at that rate you'd be better
off just investing in a printer.

If you're working with a limited number of flyers, try posting them in
public places with little tear off things at the bottom. Another
option is to put up ads on Craigslist.

you may also want to consider putting multiple flyers on one page of
11x8.5 sheet of paper. If you can fit the message in the space of 1/4
of a page, then you've increased your number of flyers. Plus, we've
noticed that people are more likely to take a smaller peice of paper
then a full page.
