Dear all,

Attached is the near final slide show (attached as PDF).  Please feel free to comment.  All that is left is for me to add a full-list of citations.

That being said, here is a short summary of the changes I made:

  • J-Star and E-Star, your slides are Slides 2 and 3.  I removed some of the words and a few bullet points I felt that we cover in other sections, simply to make room.  I also changed one of the neuron pictures to one that better fits the corner.  Slide 3 looks great.  I made only formatting changes (color, etc.), but also added a key-point statement at the bottom.
  • Slides 4 - 7 are Cody's and mine.  A lot of the text was cut down, as per our earlier meeting, and I replaced these with pictures from one the references Rebecca sent.
  • Rebecca and Maira have Slides 8 - 11.  The first slide is almost exactly what Maira originally sent.  I elaborated on neuroimaging in Slide 9 (structural and functional forms), and also began to talk about histological tests in this slide (transitions for Rebecca).  There is a cartoon showing the expected differences in histology between a diseased and non-diseased brain (right corner).
    • Slide 10 is strictly images, so Rebecca, I can go over with you what each represents, but you probably already have a good idea from the previous versions of the slideshow.  Of noteworthiness, I thought animal-model pictures (right panel) would be useful as well.
    • Slide 11 is strictly devoted to upcoming in vivo neuroimaging, and includes images, as well as a summarizing statement at the bottom.

Thank you,

I think this is a great amount of image and text, and still leaves lots of room for us to fill in parts we can just talk about.  I really like the histo slide!

Thanks Mike! It looks great! I know most of the images you have on slides 10 & 11 and can read the papers relevant to the new images. We can make sure I have everything down for the presentation when we practice on Monday.

Jackie: once you have everyone else's part of the handout, can you just send it out? I'll see what's not covered yet and add my parts to it.

Thanks!

If everyone can send me their part sometime tonight, and include references it would be easier for me to compile!  Rebecca, could that include your part? It's hard to place everything without having all the info.  So far I only got something from Maira (sorry if I missed someone)

looks great, Mike. I like the changes you made to my slides and will make sure I know all of the info. I noticed that my reference wasn't included at the end though. Did I not send it to you? Let me know.

Thanks for putting this together!

Also, just wanted to note that star's/my portion required us write about research in the field so we added some hot topics worth mentioning (including trauma to the head, which is kind of a hot topic)

And for our reference, the rubric for grading of our handout:

Quality of information in the handout.

1. Superficial, minimal detail, insufficient to permit basic understanding
of the disease
2. Some detail, but inadequate information to allow basic understanding
of the disease
3. Sufficient information to understand basic information about the
disease
4. Missing minimal information,  but provided a very good
understanding of the disease
5. Complete, thorough, all facts correct, allowing complete
understanding of the disease
Format of the handout.  Clarity of information.

1. Disorganized; many grammatical errors; difficult to follow
2. Somewhat disorganized; some grammatical errors, not easy to follow
3. Overall fairly clear, however, some disorganization or scattered
grammatical errors; could have improvements to facilitate
interpretation
4. Minimal disorganization or grammatical mistakes; clear and flows well
5. Organized, grammatically correct and easy to read/interpret
Graphics of histology/pathology of disease.

1. None or incorrect visuals
2. Inadequate visuals to support content
3. Reasonable use of visuals, somewhat enhances presentation
4. Significant use of visuals, but could have 1 or 2 more to solidify
5. Outstanding visuals that enhance understanding/facilitate learnin

yea feel free to take the thing marked in red out or reformat it!  i added that because it seemed like something important and emphasize in all that we talked about, and i didnt see it anywhere so i found the most relevant place.

With respect to the red text, I think it is an important point to make, but as written, it may be mis-leading when considering our discussion of PET.  We should clarify it, but keep it, in my opinion.

yea, i agree. it makes a lot of sense now that i think about it. especially since the article is from 2010 so it's so recent which means that it's an accepted thing right now. we can just have an extra sentence saying how PET may be changing that and then cite that article.

great job with the handout, jackie! and with the powerpoint, mike!

I didn't forget about the handout.  I am working on the etiology section now, and its pretty much done, but I need to condense it a bit.  I am going to sleep on my thoughts, and then send it tomorrow.

I guess to give everyone some piece of mind, below is the etiology section for the handout.  Rebecca, feel free to make changes as you incorporate it into your version.  As I want to add citations tomorrow, send me the final version tomorrow.

As with most neuropsychiatric diseases, the causes of AD are multi-faceted, and our understanding of this disease’s etiology is not complete.  At the macroscopic level, a characteristic of AD is selective neuronal loss in the hippocampus and cortex – leading to enlarged third and lateral ventricles – and since these regions are responsible for memory and cognition, brain-atrophy may explain AD’s defining symptoms.  Importantly, neuronal loss distinguishes AD from normal cognitive impairments that increase with age.
The biochemical processes that underlie neuronal loss are beginning to be understood, and as with most other neurodegenerative diseases, these involve insoluble deposits, ionic dysregulation and oxidative stress.  For example, β-amyloid (Aβ) is likely involved in the disease’s pathogenesis.  Aβ is a cleavage product of the amyloid precursor protein (APP).  Several endoproteases, known as secretases, cleave APP to form variably sized Aβ peptides.  In the diseased brain, Aβ42 is produced in a relatively greater quantity, and this peptide is highly pathogenic, forming plaques and affecting synaptic plasticity.
Missense mutations in APP, as well as proteins that regulate its cleavage, are associated with AD in humans, elevating Aβ42, and this suggests that AD is caused by dysfunctional APP processing and Aβ synthesis.   Another characteristic of AD is hyperphosphorylated tau tangles, caused by aberrant kinase/phosphatase activity and intra-cellular accumulation.  Recently identified characteristics of AD include glial cell activation, leading to ionic dysregulation and oxidative stress.  Although all these characteristics define AD’s pathogenesis, and appear as a series, roughly in this order, it is not clear which particular process causes the neurocognitive impairments.

I've compiled the sections and it's just about 2 pages.

Do you guys think we should convert the references to endnote format? I think the in-text citations clutter the handout (and take up more room).

Jackie: Just in case, can you export your references file (as Bibliographic Software...or that's what RefWorks calls the format) and send it to me? This way if you don't get a chance to add Mike's, I can.

Maira-I made an edit to your section and I wanted to make sure you were ok with it. I thought it was better to more clearly separate the diagnosis criteria and what the diagnosis is based on.

I think I'm just going to add a few sentences to Mike's explaining what tau proteins do. That's probably the best place to describe it I think....And then it should be done!

I'll send out a final version this afternoon.

Thanks!

I think the in-text citations should be converted to number ([1], [2], [3], etc.), instead of author-date.  That will give us a lot more space.

Hey, agreed about endnotes!  let me see what i can do... but if i can't you can just add #s and change the bibliography around.

Hey rebecca, I don`t know how to export the bibliography :(  you can add mike's by clicking on references tab and "insert citation" then fill out the info for JOURNAL ARTICLE.  Also I kept it in ALA format.  I can do this if Mike sends it before class/during class today.

As for endnotes, i`m sorry this is being such a butt!  Would you mind just putting in #s for the parentheticals?  it might be easier actually once everything is done to convert to 2003/earlier version of word doc and then just edit there so that the reference program doesn't give you problem.  sorry about that! the bibliography should stay intact if you do that but you can copy and paste from it as you please

Thanks for checking in and I hope you all are having fun!

I've attached the most updated version of the handout. I've added 1 sentence to etiology explaining what tau proteins do and also changed the references to # endnote format.

I still need the following:
1. References from Mike for etiology section of handout
2. There are 2 references on the handout that I don't see cited within the handout (they are listed on the bottom of the references)...Can whoever used those sources tell me where to cite them?
3. Final PPT slides from Mike (the last slide is missing all the references....you could delete that slide and then send me the final presentation...that way we won't have to deal w/ making a slide with references if you don't have time..it's up to you)
3. A practice exam question from description and etiology groups....if you guys don't get around to it, I can make up the questions

If you guys can get me the above things asap, that'd be great.

Thanks and enjoy,
RW

Maira: Can you send out the question we made Thursday afternoon? I didn't write it down and couldn't find it in your previous e-mail.

Should we set a time to meet tomorrow to practice presentation? How about 8p?

Hi there,

8:00 p.m. tomorrow works for me.

I looked over the uncited references form the handout, and these studies looked at incidence and survival.  Since we do not explicitly discuss these in the Description section, which is where they belong, I would remove these citations from the references.

It may have been used by the group assigned Description originally, but these articles' material doesn't seem to be included in the final version of the handout, so therefore, these citations should be removed.

Best,

Mike Miller

Hi there,

Attached is a near final version of the slideshow with all etiology references, as well as those Rebecca formatted in the handout.  Please review this for completeness.

Lastly, for Jackie and Star, do you recall the source of the graph shown on Slide 2, since if you do, I would like to credit the source.

Cody, can you see all the slides in either of the attached PPT formats?

We need 4 questions. I've attached all 4--including 2 others I made. Maira and I made the edits you suggested for the other 2. Feel free to make other edits before submitting it to Dr. Shaw.

Mike: I think the ppt looks great and is good to go. You can make any changes you feel necessary to the 4 questions or if you have other questions you'd like to include, feel free to switch them in. And I think you already have the most up to date version of the handout. Once you add the references, it should be ready.

Thanks so much for submitting it and if you do end up needing anything, give me a call (718.662.8011). I don't mind being woken up.

Thanks again!

Are you working on the references for the handout now? I would like to go to bed soon so would you be able to send the final versions to Dr. Shaw tonight? I'm not sure if people are still working on practice exam questions now, but I said I could do them so I'll send a Word doc w/ 4 questions to you and if you get more, you can pick which ones to get a variety.

Also, I like the edits you made to my previous question. I'll change it and send 2 more to you.

Let me know if you'd be OK submitting the final slides, handout, and questions to Dr. Shaw.

Thanks!
