Hi Everyone,
I am pleased to report that UAC's first Executive Board meeting was successfully held on August 9, 2011. A number of issues were discussed and decided. We know that we are all having a wonderful summertime but it is important that we bring a few of the decisions reached to your attension.

At the August 9th Executive Board meeting it was decided among other things, that the Organization be formally launched at the end of August and that during the launching, we hold a fundraiser to help alleviate the plight of our Somali brothers that are currently faced with drought and hunger. The situation in somalia is so dire that over 30,000 persons including women and children have died of hunger and starvation over the last few months.

The Executive Board weighed the decision to hold this fundraiser and concluded that it was necessary and urgent that we do whatever we can to be of some assistance.

The date for the launching and fundraiser has been tentatively set for August 27, 2011 at the UND International Center but negations are underway to move the launch and fundraiser to a bigger location. We can not sit idly bye while many are perishing. We encourage you to be proactive and be engaged as a new day is beginning in African Unity in the Grand Forks area.

We will keep you posted as developments unfold.

Thanks!
George D. Massaquoi
Your Hunble Secretary

        Hi George.
Thanks for the update. I applaud the idea of a fund raiser for the famine crisis in Somalia. The plight of the famine victims is really heart-breaking. I just wanted to know if you guys at the level of the Executive Board have been able to figure out how to channel whatever help we might get to those in need in Somalia. You know, given the complexity of the situation in Somalia, channeling help to the target people can be a daunting task.
                                                     Renon.

Brother Renon Ayuk,

Yours is an excellent question to be answered even before the fundraising activity begins for Somalia. I am sure the Executive Board will respond to it, but I think I should factor in one or two ideas if it will be of assistance in the Board's deliberations. 1. It could be helpful for the Board to approach a bank like University Federal Credit Union for assistance. When I served as President of the International Human Rights Organization, the bank was able to channel funds we collected for Haiti Relief for free; 2. It could also be helpful to track a credible civil society organization on the ground - particularly those recognized by the African Union - to quickily channel relief funds and work with it in partnership for this effort and perhaps future efforts.

Thanks,

Mandala

Hello Renon,

Your concern is the same concern the Exco has had and we are working on looking such credible ways of delivering whatever we are to raise so it reaches the targeted suffering people. Also, because our group is still a "baby" group, yet to establish the required legal status to carry out such activities our concerns are far beyond just the reliable transfer of collected funds. Nonetheless, we continue to work on this and other issues and sometime next week we hope to arrive at some decision.

I also would like to take this opportunity to alert everyone that we may be changing plans for the lunching of the organization due to some practical difficulties in organizing the lunching event.

I will like to extend appreciation to everyone that has contributed any ideas so far, the exco has taken note and will act upon as appropriate.

More updates will be available next week. Please, we are at the stage where we need to tell evry African that lives in the Grand Forks metropolitan area about this organization and possibly collect their contacts to forward to the exco or direct them to contact the exco for further details. Although the exco is working on ways to reach out more, everyone's help is also invaluable in the process.

Have a good weekend everyone.

Alex.
