Title: From text to formal models: Understanding software requirements

Abstract: During the software development process, a software engineer or architect takes a description of a system written in natural language, i.e. the software requirements specification, and translates into a set of formal models to describe the system (e.g. UML class diagrams). Apart from taking considerable time and effort, this design phase can create incorrect designs due to misinterpretations of incomplete, ambiguous, and erroneous requirements. In very large systems, these misinterpretations may be compounded by having multiple teams work on different aspects of the system, resulting in large amounts of rework when it is discovered the different components cannot be integrated at a later stage.

This presentation will provide a brief overview of my research which aims to overcome these problems by automating the design process from the natural language specifications. It will describe what has been achieved so far, the challenges faced, and where the research is headed.

Kind regards
Kerry
