Title:
Information Governance in the Cloud era

Abstract:
Information is the new 'currency' of business and cloud computing, the revolutionary business paradigm that has come a long way from being called a ‘marketing buzzword’ to a ‘disruptive innovation’. As cloud computing transforms the technology industry as we know it, enabling ubiquitous use of computing resources and offering an unprecedented mobility to the workforce, information management researchers and practitioners, not to mention business managers are all trying to find new ways to leverage enterprise information that seems to be exploding in volume and variety. While cloud computing promotes rapid and responsive elasticity; access to data, software, platform and computing infrastructure on a pay-per-use, self-service model, reducing operational costs, enabling faster deployment of resources, and improving enterprise agility, there are concerns about access to reliable and secure information, especially as questions about information ownership, contract lock-ins and information control have not been fully explored. The many types of cloud - be it private, public, community or hybrid – only adds complexity to the provision of reliable and secure information. Notwithstanding the predicted adoption trends for the cloud, it is still important to resolve information related issues so that organizations can keep pace with customer expectations while ensuring regulatory compliance to information governance (IG) requirements.

IG is coming to be accepted as a necessary practice to ensure the delivery of consistent and ‘fit for use’ enterprise information. Poor quality information can have serious consequences for an organization, making IG a primary concern for both the business and the technology divisions in an organization. In fact, IG is deemed as critical for the successful transition of a business from traditional on-site delivery model to the cloud. The only problem is that while the significance of IG for the cloud is widely acknowledged, there is not much available in terms of specific strategy and framework that could act as a guideline for organizations on the verge of a transition. Ad hoc approaches abound and ‘cloudwashing’ is also not uncommon, but the lack of new interoperable standards for information in the cloud and lack of knowledge about the cloud is definitely causing some disillusionment within the technology industry. Reliable information underpins strategic initiatives in organizations. This research aims to identify the unique information governance issues faced by organizations shifting their information management into the cloud, by reviewing the shortcomings of traditional information governance practices when super-imposed over the cloud. This research will also try and identify the critical success factors for adoption of cloud based information governance, aiming to provide an insight into strategy, policies and guidelines for information governance in the cloud era.

Kind regards
Kerry
