Title:
Converging Operational and Information Technologies
Abstract:
Engineering Asset Management (EAM) has evolved into an integrated model that is unique within the business context (Too, 2010). A successful EAM strategy requires an integrated technology infrastructure and a comprehensive
information governance framework, enabled by technology solutions (Humprey, 2003, Sklar, 2004). Similarities in Operational Technology (OT) and Information Technology (IT) solutions, pressure to reduce system infrastructure and maintenance costs, competitiveness
within particularly the energy sector and the need to govern OT are driving organisations to converge, align and integrate OT and IT in EAM (Steenstrup, 2012). Benefits arising from this path include reduced financial, legal and reputational risks, decreased
operational costs and less reactive maintenance (Humffray, 2004; Parekh, 2007; Mays Business School, 2011). This research aims to identify criteria for if and when organisations with EAM functions move from convergence, to alignment and integration to maximise
asset performance. The research also aims to identify when it is advantageous for IT compared to Engineering areas of organisations to responsible or the authority for the technology. In order to measure the points of convergence, alignment and integration
and the responsibility context, the research describes information governance criteria that may form a framework to assist organisations with EAM functions to converge, align and integrate OT and IT.
