Two Ways Out:  Fire Prevention Tips From St. Paul Fire Marshall Zaccard: "Have 2 Ways Out"

  • Every room should have at least two ways to get out, especially bedrooms. One way out is the door and the other way out can be a window - if it's large enough and you can open it.
  • Make and escape plan for your home and practice it. Most people feel safest in their homes, but that is the worse place for having fires. Nationally, 85% of fire deaths happen in the residence. In Saint Paul, that number is 100%
  • Have working smoke detectors both outside and inside each bedroom and on each level of the home. TEST them at least monthly. Change the batteries every year. Our slogan is:   "Change Your Clock, Change Your Battery", meaning that when you change your clocks back to Standard time, make that the time you change the batteries in your smoke alarms.
  • If you have a fire in your home, don't waste too much time trying to put it out before calling 9-1-1. One commonality in most tragic fires is a delayed reporting of the fire to the fire department. Also, most fire-related injuries happen to people who are trying to put out the fire, themselves. When you have a fire, GET OUT and then call 9-1-1 right away.
  • Saint Paul homeowners can participate in our Project Safe Haven by calling 651-228-6273. Project Safe Haven is a voluntary, self-inspection of your home using a handy checklist that we provide. If you want, your local firefighters can stop by your house, meet you and go over your inspection with you. Then they'll check your detectors, and if you need them, they'll install FREE smoke alarms, carbon monoxide alarms, and stovetop fire extinguishers. We've done over 600 homes so far and none have had a fire in four years!

The Union Park District Council's Neighborhood Issues Committee (NIC) meets once per month to discuss issues related to Crime and Safety, Traffic Calming and Pedestrian Issues, and Neighborhood Communication and Outreach.  All NIC meetings are open to the public and the committee welcomes community participation.  The next NIC meeting will be on Monday, November 12th from 6:30-8pm.  For more information, please contact the Union Park office at (651)645-6887 or by email at in...@unionparkdc.org
