Community gardens are associated with safer neighborhoods. According to Gardening Matters, they provide “a focal point for community organizing, and can lead to community-based efforts to deal with other social concerns.” Many police departments see community gardening as an effective crime prevention strategy.
So it is a pleasure to invite you to:
Merriam Station Community Garden (MSCG)
Raffle, Plant & Bake Sale
Saturday May 4 (TOMORROW)
9 a.m. – 3 p.m.
Merriam Park Recreation Center
2000 St. Anthony Avenue.
See a list of raffle prizes below
(Our Rain Barrel Workshop & Sale is also happening tomorrow at the same place at 10 a.m. Drop in and learn about to learn about using rain barrels for your garden.)
Funds raised will be used to install water system for the garden on Prior Ave. and University Ave, which serves about 70 families in addition to being committed to working with the Keystone Midway Food Shelf.
While locking our doors and cleaning up graffiti is often an effective way to say “NO!” to crime, good neighborhoods also require that we affirm what we do want. I encourage you to say “YES!” to MSCG, which is transforming a neglected space into a real community asset near some of Union Park’s more troubled areas.
It would be great to see you Saturday!
