How is this for good timing? Starting today, Friday, May 10 - Monday, May 13, Linder’s Garden Centers will give Merriam Station Community Garden 15% of the sales of anyone presenting the attached coupon. If you’re going to do any plant/garden shopping this weekend, perhaps for Mother’s Day, please use this coupon. With your support, last weekend MSCG had a successful Plant & Bake Sale and raised $2000+, which is half of their fundraising goal. We thank Linder’s and our neighbors for helping the garden cross the finish line. With the multiple benefits of community gardens, including reduced crime, they have done more than help pay for a needed water system; they are improving the quality of life for all of us here.

Let me also make a plug for the Land Use Committee meeting on Tuesday, May 14th, 6:30 pm at Anchor Bank. Topics will include: the role of the district council in land use processes, current zoning in Union Park, and how zoning affects new development in the neighborhood. Learn the the ins and outs of variances, nonconforming uses and site plan review processes. Leveling the playing field to begin a community discussion on how zoning and other regulatory tools might help us achieve the kind of environment we want in Union Park. See agenda here.

These are two excellent ways we can get connected with each other as we create and proactively support the stuff that makes our neighborhoods good and safe places to live.

Finally, here’s something else you can do. Senior Commander Axtell notes that in April, there have been 95 cases of theft from auto, slightly up from last year. So, he is asking that we please do not leave ANY items in our cars. Common things stolen from vehicles include brief cases, gym bags, purses, laptops, electronics of any sort, and cash. Thieves will break a window to take even the smallest amount of spare change, leaving the car owner with the cost of repairs. These crimes of opportunities leave people feeling vulnerable and give the perception of unsafe neighborhoods. Together we can make our neighborhoods feel and be safer if we simply eliminate some easy targets.

Please let me know if you have any suggestions regarding these or any other issues.
