Thursday, 10 past noon, Mid-day Eucharist commemorating the
Martyrs of Japan
Please join us on Thursday at 10 minutes past noon as we
celebrate a brief mid-day eucharist commemorating the Martys of Japan.
Christianity was brought to Japan in the sixteenth century by Jesuit and
Franciscan missionaries. The religion was suppressed, however, and in
1597 twenty-six missionaries and converts were crucified. Nevertheless,
Christianity survived and later prospered.

Sunday, February 10: First Sunday in Lent
9AM Choir;
9:30 Adult Forum continues discussing
"Christianity
Incorporated," by two Roman Catholic academics, one a
political scientist and the other a philospher. The book examines
our conflicting loyalties, loyalties Jesus referred to when he said that
we cannot serve both both God and mammon. The book examines, in
particular, one of the most powerful contemporary expressions of mammon,
corporate capitalism, an expression that did not exist in Biblical times.
The authors provide a powerful critique of corporate culture, showing how
corporations have co-opted the Church in modern America to serve as
"the chaplain" of capitalism. Fred Quivik is
leading the series.

Happy are they whose transgressions àre forgiven,
and whose sin is pùt away!
Happy are they to whom the LORD im- pùtes no guilt,
and in
whose spirit there ìs no guile!
ANTIPHON
While I held my tongue, my bones with- èred away,
because of my groaning àll day long.
For your hand was heavy upon me dày and night;
my
moisture was dried up as in the hèat of summer.
Then I acknowledged my sin to you, and did not con- cèal my
guilt.
I said, "I will confess my transgressions to the LORD." Then
you forgave me the guilt òf my sin.
Therefore all the faithful will make their prayers to you in
tìme of trouble;
when
the great waters overflow, they shàll not reach them.
ANTIPHON
You are my hiding-place; you preserve mè from trouble;
you surround me with shouts òf deliverance.
"I will instruct you and teach you in the way that yòu
should go;
I will
guide you wìth my eye.
Do not be like horse or mule, which have no
ùnderstanding;
who must be fitted with bit and bridle, or else they will nòt stay
near you."
Great are the tribulations òf the wicked;
but
mercy embraces those who trust ìn the LORD.
Be glad, you righteous, and rejoice ìn the LORD;
shout for joy, all who are trùe of heart.
ANTIPHON
Hymn of the Day: ELW 788: “If God My Lord Be for Me”
Offertory: “Durch Adams Fall” – Samuel Scheidt (1587-1653)
Text: Lazarus Spengler (1524)
Through Adam’s fall human nature
and character is completely corrupted,
the same poison has been inherited by us,
so that we would not be able to recover health
without comfort from God, who has redeemed us
from the great harm
that was done when the serpent overcame Eve
and led her to bring God’s wrath upon herself.
Communion Hymn: ELW 330: “Seed That in Earth Is Dying”
Communion Chant, Salvator Mundi (Taizé round)
Sending Hymn: ELW 319: “O Lord, throughout These Forty Days”
Postlude: Grand Jeu in A Minor – Nicolas de Grigny (1672-1703)

Additional Lenten Resources:
From the ELCA: Living Earth
http://www.elca.org/advocacy/spotlight/08-01-10-enviro.html
Called to be in communion with God’s creation, we must
live in such a way that is sensitive to precious natural resources and in
conscious relationship to the earth, creatures and each other.
This 40-day ELCA Lenten reflection series will offer a holistic approach
to how we live as earthly companions, combining God’s caring relationship
with creation to our journey in the physical universe. The first devotion
wil arrive on Ash Wednesday, and the last on Easter Sunday.
From Acting ON AIDS:
http://www.worldvision.org/aoa.nsf/aids/events_40daystowardjusticeand
download you 40 Days to Justice
Guide. Each of
the readings will consider how Jesus responded to the dominant structures
of his day and strategies to apply to the present-day.
We still have a number of copies of "40 Days and 40 Nights" by
Gail Ramshaw. We gave these out last year thanks to a generous gift from
members of the congregation. If you did not receive one last year,
look for copies in the Narthex this Sunday.
I have also downloaded a Large Print version of "Come to Me, All
Pilgrims Thirsty" from Luther Seminary, and will make copies for
anyone who requests them.
