Greetings sisters and brothers in Christ,
I wish you all could have been with me this past week in Nashville for
Re-Sounding Campus Ministry. I am thankful that
church council made it possible for me to attend.
The opening presentation, by Rev. Becca Stevens, Episcopal
Chaplain at St Augustine's Chapel at Vanderbilt University, founder of
Magdalene
a two-year residential community founded in
Nashville, Tennessee in 1997 for women with a history of prostitution and
drug addiction. Magdalene was founded not just to help a sub-culture of
women, but to help change the culture itself. They stand in solidarity
with women who are recovering from sexual abuse, violence, and life on
the streets, and who have paid dearly for a culture that buys and sells
women like commodities.
Thistle Farms,
http://www.thistlefarms.org/founder.html is a non-profit business
operated by the women of Magdalene. They make by hand bath and body
products which are environmentally responsible. The jobs help the women
gain experience to re-enter the work force.
Other presenters included Amy Jill Levine, Professor of New Testament at
Vanderbilt University Divinity School, who presented on the differences
between how Jews and Christians interpret Scripture , and Betty DeBerg,
from UNI, and Director of the National Study of Campus Ministry. There
were two musical experiences, Alathea, two women from East Tennessee who
had an incredible blend of folk, porch mountain music, and story telling,
always with a Christ-centered focus. The other musician was Peter Mayer,
well know in many circles as part of Jimmy Buffet's band.
Enough of my excitement. As you all know, things are exciting here at
UniLu, with the expected visit of the prospective new pastor's visit
coming up next weekend. (Saturday 4-19 and Sunday 4-20)

Thursday, Mid-week Eucharist resumes, commemorating Mikael
Agricola, Bishop of Turku, died 1557
At 10 past noon, we will gather around the font for a brief mid-day
eucharist. Mikael Agricola, was consecrated bishop of Turku,
Finland, without the approval of the pope, Agricola began a reform along
Lutheran lines. In only three years, he translated the New Testament and
worship texts into Finnish, in the process establishing the rules of
Finnish writing that are still used today.
