Lenten Thanks!!!!!!

The office would like to start with a huge thank-you to all the people who helped with the transition into Lent, especially for Bobbie Burnett and Nancy Forrest for restoration work on the corpus which is on the cross in the chancel. The corpus has a rich history which is witnessed in its present condition. It was originally placed in the chancel of Holy Cross Lutheran on Lehigh Ave, when that congregation merged with a nearby German Lutheran congregation. We have a photograph here showing the chancel, and the corpus was painted with a white finish. When the church suffered from a fire, the corpus received a good deal of smoke damage. It was taken down and put into storage, and forgotten about. When Holy Cross closed it's doors a few years ago we had the opportunity to bring it here to UniLu. Bobbie and Nancy were able to re-attach the arms,  and applied a coat of oil to the surface, preserving the stories of fire and hope, rejoicing and sorrow, all reflected in its surfaces.

We are also indebted to Steve and Janah Szewczyk and Gary Bronson for mounting the corpus on the cross, and to Gary for removing pew torches and installing the Stations of the Cross.

  • Tonight: Feast Incarnate: 4PM, Study-serve-pray extra help alert
We always welcome help on Tuesdays, between 4 and 6, participating in the Bible Study, setting tables for the meal, serving, and helping clean up. Come for as long as you are able, 1/2 hour, or the entire time.

Due to the weather, we have just heard that tonights church, St. Luke, Devon, plans to drop the food off this afternoon and then leave. We will need to reheat and serve the food ourselves. If you are near campus and can help out serving and cleaning up. it would be most appreciated!

Nourishing the Soul: A Journey of Christian Discipleship

"Prayer requires education, training, reflection, and contemplation. It is not enough to join others; it is necessary to build a sanctuary within, brick by brick, instants of meditation and moments of devotion." Abraham Joshua Heschel

        Wishful Thinking by Frederick Buechner
Everyday Simplicity: A Practical Guide to Spiritual Growth by Robert Wicks
The Cost of Discipleship by Dietrich Bonhoeffer

Hymn of the Day: ELW 323: “God Loved the World”

Offertory Anthem: “O Heilges Geist und Wasserbad” – J.S. Bach
(words: Salomo Franck)
Sara Posey, soprano; Marcia Kravis, harpsichord

Today’s offertory is a soprano aria by J.S. Bach, the first movement of his Cantata no. 165.  The cantata was composed in 1715 for Trinity Sunday: the Gospel reading on that day was the same as ours today, the beginning of John 3.  The soprano sings in long, flowing melismas, depicting the flow of both water and the Spirit in the “holy bath” of baptism.  Bach illustrates the “miraculous power” of Baptism at the end of the text, as the melody reaches its highest and most thrilling register on the words “the gift of new life.”

O sacred bath of water and the Spirit,
That incorporates us in God’s kingdom
And writes us down in the book of life!
O flood-tide, that drowns all misdeeds
Through its miraculous power
And gives us the gift of new life!
O sacred bath of water and the Spirit!

Communion Hymn: ELW 759: “My Faith Looks Up to Thee’

Communion Chant, alternate weekly: Salvator Mundi (Taizé round) [same as Ash Wednesday]

Sending Hymn: ELW 802: “Let Us Ever Walk with Jesus”

Postlude: “In Nomine” – John Bull (1562-1628)

After a brief coffee hour, we will gather in the sanctuary for An Italian Journey

Monday, 2-18, 6PM: Faith and Film Series  I Robot

I, Robot
Set in a future Earth (2035 A.D.) where robots are common assistants and workers for their human owners, this is the story of "robotophobic" Chicago Police Detective Del Spooner's investigation into the murder of Dr. Alfred Lanning who works at U.S. Robotics, in which a robot, Sonny, appears to be implicated, even though that would mean the robot had violated the Three Laws of Robotics, which is apparently impossible. It seems impossible because.. if robots can break those laws, there's nothing to stop them from taking over the world, as humans have grown to become completely dependent upon their robots. Or maybe... they already have? Aiding Spooner in his investigation is a psychologist, Dr. Susan Calvin, who specializes in the psyches of robots.  All are welcome to join the students for this offering.

I had no idea that was the history of the corpus.  I added your explanation to the Photographs page on the website.
