I have not been to this site after the other blog page changed and just putting in my two cents worth of info. If any of you Uniflite owners that need info on your Detroit engines feel free to e-mail at sonofstrat @ shaw.ca  or here. Being a retired diesel engine tech and instructor I can usually come up with the answer to any problems with your engines. There seems to be a lack of technicians that know how to repair these thing properly and how to tune them up as times have changed and the electronic engines are taking over. I will have a tune up video for these engines in the near future and will be available as a download from my website in the fall.

Be careful on assembly and assembling piston and liners as they can be tempermentle. Get advice and a manual as it will help. to some degree.

Yes you are and a head service. Change the valve springs, valves, valve seats and guides as this will cause grief if the head is not serviced properly. Also change the injector tubes as the o-rings under the injector tubes get hard a like to leak coolant which Detroits do not like in the base. If you can afford to have the head serviced as I have suggested you will have very little problems in the future. Have a look at the pistons and liners as well and make a decision if they need replacing. It is hard to tell someone to spend their hard earned dollars but once the head is off it doesn't hurt to look further. How many hours and how old is the engine. I am only giving you what I think should be done to avoid any issues you might have later. Having overhauled around about 30 of these engines you understand them and know their weak points. Just some old fashioned advice.

Capt. Bill: These are good engines. Keep a yearly valve set in mind and regular oil and fuel filter change and these engines will last a long time.
