Hello all!

Does anyone have definitive dates as to which models have the
blistering resin in them. I have heard anywhere from '70 to '74
styart to '80 to '85 end. Any help on this is appreciated.

Thanks,
Victor

Victor:

I did quite a bit of research into this before I bought my 42 DC.
What I discovered is that Uniflite changed resins in August of 1974
and the new resins caused the blister problem. I bought a 1974 model
built in April of 1974 and have had only one blister problem. I
forgot that the manufacture date of a boat is the day that the "keel"
is laid. There have been a couple of blisters on the piece that forms
the cabin side and "sun visor" over the cabin windshields. It seems
that several months elapsed between the molding of the hull and the
installation of this last piece of the boat. I haven't found a
blister on any other part of the boat in the seven years I've owned
it.

As I was only interested in an older boat so I never discovered a date
that ended the "blister problem".

As I'm sure you have been advised, the blisters are only cosmetic and
not a structure problem. If you can find a blistered boat cheap
enough, there are many yards that can permanently take care of the
blisters.

I had read somewhere that the very end of 1975 is when the resin was
changed at the request of the navy. Too many boats were catching on
fire as a result of incoming in viet nam. I have 1975 and have never
had any blisters and I keep it in Northern Idaho where the summers are
hot. rich spies

I own 1980 42 convertible had hundreds of blisters, ground down to fiberglass and reepoxyed and bottom painted 4 years ago no new blisters.  Local work yard in Edmonds did the work very resonably.

My wife and I have owned a 1984 48' YF Uniflite and keep it in Kemah, TX. We, so far, have not had any blistering issues. Hope this helps.

The official blister problem years are 1975 to 1982. HOWEVER,
according to numerous people who worked at Uniflite, and who I've
talked to personally, there were a few 1975 boats that didn't have
blisters, and this is why....

Uniflite always kept a completed hull in each mold to maintain the
molds form/shape (another Uniflite example of quality craftsmenship).
So if they needed to build a boat, there was always a hull in the mold
ready to go. So they would pop it out to build the boat and then
immediately the fiberglass guys would layup a hull in the empty mold.
And depending on the model, it could be weeks or months before the
hull sitting in the mold was popped out and used.

So a hull that was layed up (constructed) in the fall/winter of 1974,
could easily have remained in the mold until spring of 1975, and then
used on a boat sold as a "1975 model". Especially in models like the
Mega, or other less popular models that had a slower production cycle
because of lower demand. So in those cases you would have a 1975
without blisters.

And there you have it. The long and short of it is this...it is the
build date of the hull, topsides, decks etc. etc. that determines if
you have a "blister" boat.

Lastly, there is no "permanent solution" for fixing blister boats. If
a yard tells you that, they haven't done their homework. :0)

Now that's funny!  I guess that's what you get for using poor quality wenches (sorry, couldn't resist).

'1984' ... you missed the 'blister years'.  Lucky you.  You have nothing to worry about.

-------------- Original message from Paul Graham <pau...@pacbell.net>: --------------

My skin of my boat was perfectly clear, then I let a skanky ex-girlfriend spend the night on the boat while I wasn't around. Sure enough, two days later blisters were everywhere. On the advise of my mechanic, I poured 3 gallons of penicillin down the fuel tanks. The blisters were gone in 48 hours.

Maybe your the skank and you should set yourself on fire and get off of a site that really tries to help people.
