Engine rotation on twin inboards

I have twin 350 crusaders in my 1978 32' uniflite the port engine was
seized upon purchase
I am starting too rebuild one for it but what confuses me is the cam
is driven gear to gear so it is spinning reverse as if it were chain
drive. Is it this way to keep from changing the distributor gear or am
I missing a big picture

You got it. The small block 327 Chevies in my 61 Owens were the same.
One by gear, other by chain. Distributor same for both. Firing order
Quite different from normal rotation! Hope you noted the plug wires.

They must turn the distributors the same way so the oil pump turns the right way. RAy
