AGM Battery replacement

I have a twin diesel 42'. I had my batteries changed about 6 years ago. At the time I had 3 8d AGM batteries put in with a smart charger. They seem good as new but I am feeling I might need to change them. Anyone know how long these types should last? Is there any test I can do to check whether they are close to done? Or is it a simple thing a yard could do with the right equipment? They aren't cheap or light so I would want to get the most I can from them without getting stuck somewhere.

Bob, AGM batteries will last longer than flooded wet cell batteries. As far as the state they are in many yards are now switching to conductance meters rather than just a load test as it gives a more precise reading of the batteries ability to be conductive. While a simple voltage test and load test may show ok it will not show if a cell is going bad till it's real bad. Last year I purchased one ( not cheap ) and it has told me batteries that were 11.5 volts were still good so I charged them on a smart charger and they indeed were just in need of a charge. FYI one of my customers has a single 8d AGM that is eight years old and working fine
It is however on a gas engine.

Bob, be sure to let the rest of us know what you find.  I've had now checks and now problems in the (nearly) six years since I put the 31 AGMs in as starting batteries.  By-the-way, that is all they do -- start the engines.  And, I am charging them with the Delco alternators that came with the engines.

Thanks George,

By owning an boat built in 1973 I am on 2 different boat yards Christmas lists so I bet I could stop by and get a quick conductance test to see where I am. I am encouraged that they could last a while. They get very light usage and act as good as new so 3-4 more years would be great. 

(As I wrote this I realized that the hull was 1973 but almost every system on the boat has been replaced or upgraded at least once, and sometimes 3-4 times (electronics). It's a dumb hobby but I love it. )

Steve I run a small marine electrical biz ....tough to get my customers to take the plunge on the jells but they hold up to vibration and pounding much better none I put in our past six years old but two customers I have our eight years old with smart chargers. I use a tester that measures a batteries capacity ....not a load bank
