replace original cheap looking white plastic door knobs?

I have a 1973 42' that I am always trying to style upgrade on a budget. (I already spend a ton on routine/required stuff like replacing the diesel generator this year) I have always disliked the look of the original white plastic interior door knobs. I replaced the exterior white knob a while ago when I refinished my door.

Any suggestions that might be an easy fix?  I'd love a nice chrome/brass handle  but how to fit it? Maybe, if nothing else, I could paint them.  Anybody found anything that can replace them without having to do a major fill of the original holes and or replace the door?

would would you try to change that classic,,  and by the way, those cheap looking knobs, are still fully functional, how many years later?
