Hi,

Its probably way too early to talk about this but I'm curious if
anyone had thought about having regular meetings / etc just to chat
and see what people are working on or interested in, etc? We can
easily set something up via Skype as was done with the OGF meeting.
I've participated in a couple Dataportability.org calls as an observer
and they do a fine job, but their steering committee is very formal.

Who is doing what in this group, what should we strive to accomplish,
and how can we best use everyones talents to accomplish the UCI?

Cheers

I agree, we'll have to figure out the best way to do this.  Having a voice chat with a ton of people might not be easy.  Text chat maybe?  IRC, Skype Text Conference, XMPP Conference maybe?

I could probably host a teleconference using our system, any idea how many we are talking about?

I guess I'm not sure yet, there's about 400 people in this group, but I can't imagine that the total amount would be interested in weekly strategy type calls, plus with that many voice I think it could get out of control pretty quickly.  This is why we were thinking text based.  If it turns out we only have 10-15 people interested, I think voice would work.

So here's the question to the list:  Reply back if you're interested in participating in these discussions, and do you prefer voice or text?

Hi

We promote EVO in Brazil, a webconference solution that is used for hundreds of people world-wide and was used to launch the LHC system, by CERN.
Unfortunatelly we don't have many licenses available and our server is just a starting one,
but maybe, if you are in Caltech, you are allowed to use the system at their servers for free; just create a room Ad Hoc  and send invitations via email.

I agree with text.  I am sure people will phase in and out of the discussion so that would provide a contextual continuum.  I also recognize I can talk faster than I can write.

Well I'd like both, but text is a great start. It can either be a skype/xmpp chat room. The Skype one is nice because we can quickly call one another should we choose to do so, however I'm more than aware of how irritating skype can be.

Let's setup a chat room, post the details on the Google group, and perhaps the most active participants can have a bi-weekly call or something depending on the numbers.

If you want to use voice we could setup an acct. with one of the free
conference services (I use one of them all the time). Most times you can
have a rather large conference for free.

Hi ...

This might be too late but I use vyew.com for conferences ... There is a
free version with integrated voice (voip), text chat and presentation
facilities. I've tested the voip component and its not bad ... no idea what
it would be like for a large group or if there are limits on the size of
group.

If the moderators want to test it out on my account I'd be happy to
try.

Alright, after all the feedback it looks like Text is the winner for now.  I've setup a Skype chat which can be joined by going to the following URL:

http://www.skype.com/go/joinpublicchat?skypename=patwendorf&topic=Unified%20Cloud%20Interface%20%28UCI%29%20Project&blob=7RMwmJaIfiNOwRnOcivV_gu_QPvhyfVAva5EcH4pZNIJaHh1V_qCdNzRcnu135Pfk7g

I'm just in there testing right now, I'll have to come up with a date/time for meetings.  Any suggestions?

I didn't have Skype installed, so did so from the page that comes up
with that link.

Then I tried -- and it said this public chat isn't supported in "the
latest version of Skype for Windows." :-(

We noticed that 2.6 couldn't create text chats, is there a 2.7 available for your platform?  I'm using the Mac version, it seems to be working.

I prefer to discuss standards using standards.

So, VoIP (SIP. NOT SKYPE) or PSTN, with XMPP chat.

If the voice conference is moderated, with XMPP being used to ask for
the mike, then we can do many more people.

I got 4.0.0.206, which "update" says is the latest, and it doesn't
work.

Moot point, though, since apparently we're going to use XMPP (see

Still working on getting XMPP server setup, the folks at Savvis have
offered to help with hosting this. There are quite a few people on the
skype channel in the mean time.
