Pernille Ironside begins new role as UNICEF Representative in Pakistan

ISLAMABAD, 11 August 2025 – Pernille Ironside, the newly appointed UNICEF Representative in Pakistan, has formally taken up her role, presenting her credentials today to Nabeel Munir, Special Secretary (UN), at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

During the meeting, Ms. Ironside reaffirmed UNICEF’s commitment to protect and uphold the rights of all children in Pakistan. As the new Representative, Ms. Ironside will provide strategic leadership across UNICEF’s country programme which adopts a holistic approach to child well-being that aims to nurture, educate, protect and support children from their earliest moments through adolescence.

“It is an honour to lead UNICEF’s vital work for children in Pakistan. The needs of children are vast, and their potential is even greater. I look forward to building on strong foundations and working in close partnership with the Government, UN and other development partners, civil society, the public and private sectors, and passionate child rights advocates. Together, we have a powerful opportunity to create positive, lasting change so that every child can truly thrive,” said Pernille Ironside, UNICEF Representative in Pakistan. 

Under the leadership of the new Representative, UNICEF will continue to support the Government of Pakistan, delivering long-term development support and humanitarian assistance. Key areas of focus include strengthening the education system to expand access and improve learning outcomes for children, enhancing maternal and newborn care, reducing child malnutrition, increasing access to safe water and sanitation, strengthening child protection, birth registration and gender equality, and protecting children from disasters, climate and environmental risks in Pakistan.

A national of Canada, Ms. Ironside brings over 20 years of experience in international development, humanitarian action and child rights advocacy in diverse roles with UNICEF. Prior to her appointment, Ms. Ironside served as the Deputy Director of Data, Planning, Analytics and Monitoring at UNICEF Headquarters in New York; Deputy Representative in Nigeria; Chief of Field Operations in Iraq; Chief of the Gaza Strip Field Office; Senior Global Advisor on Child Protection in Emergencies; Child Protection Specialist in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo; with additional deployments in Yemen, the Philippines and Pakistan.

“With nearly half of Pakistan’s population under 18 and two-thirds below age 30, Pakistan holds extraordinary promise. This young population can be a catalyst for transformation. By investing in education, early childhood and neonatal care, nutrition, safe water, child protection, and increasing climate resilience, we can unlock the talent and creativity of children and young people to drive progress and prosperity. I look forward to leading UNICEF’s mission and being a champion for every child,” said Ms. Ironside.

پیرنیل آئرن سائیڈ نے یونیسف پاکستان کی نئی سربراہ کی حیثیت سے فرائض سنبھال لیے

اسلام آباد، 11 اگست 2025– یونیسف پاکستان کی نو تعینات یافتہ سربراہ، پیرنیل آئرن سائیڈ نے آج وزارتِ خارجہ میں اسپیشل سیکریٹری (اقوام متحدہ)، نبیل منیرکو اپنی اسنادِ تقرر پیش کرنے کے بعد باضابطہ طور پر اپنے فرائض سنبھال لیے ہیں ۔

ملاقات کے دوران پیرنیل آئرن سائیڈ نے پاکستان کے تمام بچوں کے حقوق کے تحفظ اور فروغ کے لیے یونیسف کے عزم کا اعادہ کیا۔ نئی سربراہ کی حیثیت سے وہ یونیسف کے ملک گیر پروگرام کی قیادت کریں گی، جو بچوں کی فلاح و بہبود کے ایک جامع ماڈل پر مبنی ہے ۔ یونیسف کا مقصد مربوط پروگرامنگ کے ذریعے پیدائش سے لے کر بلوغت تک بچوں کی پرورش، تعلیم، تحفظ اور مدد کو یقینی بنانا ہے۔

اس موقع پر اظہارِ خیال کرتے ہوئے سربراہ یونیسف پاکستان، پیرنیل آئرن سائیڈ، نے کہا، ’’پاکستان میں بچوں کی فلاح و بہبود کے لیے یونیسف کی خدمات کی قیادت کرنا میرے لیے اعزاز کی بات ہے۔ بچوں کی متعدد ضروریات ہوتی ہیں مگر ان کی صلاحیتیں ان سے بھی کہیں بڑھ کر ہیں۔ میں مضبوط بنیادوں پر خدمات کو آگے بڑھانے اور حکومت، سول سوسائٹی، عوامی و نجی شعبوں اور بچوں کے حقوق کے پُرجوش حامیوں کے ساتھ قریبی شراکت داری کے ذریعے کام کرنے کی منتظر ہوں۔ ہمارے پاس مثبت اور دیرپا تبدیلی پیدا کرنے کا ایک اہم موقع ہے ، جس سے فائدہ اٹھا کر ہر بچے کی حقیقی معنوں میں ترقی کو یقینی بنایا جا سکتا ہے۔‘‘

نئی سربراہ کی قیادت میں یونیسف پاکستان حکومت کی معاونت جاری رکھے گا، جس میں طویل مدتی ترقیاتی معاونت اور انسانی ہمدردی پر مبنی امداد شامل ہیں۔ اہم ترجیحات میں بچوں کی تعلیم تک رسائی بڑھانے اور تعلیمی نتائج میں بہتر ی کے لیے تعلیمی نظام کو مزید مستحکم کرنا، ماں اور نوزائیدہ بچوں کی دیکھ بھال میں بہتری، بچوں میں غذائی قلت کا خاتمہ، محفوظ پانی اور صفائی تک بہتر رسائی، بچوں کے تحفظ کے ڈھانچے کی مضبوطی اور پاکستان میں صنفی برابری کو فروغ دینا شامل ہیں۔

محترمہ آئرن سائیڈ کینیڈا کی شہری ہیں اور بین الاقوامی ترقی، انسانی ہمدردی پر مبنی اقدامات اور بچوں کے حقوق کے تحفظ کے شعبوں میں گزشتہ بیس سال سے زائد عرصے سے مختلف حیثیتوں میں یونیسف میں خدمات انجام دے رہی ہیں۔ اپنے حالیہ تقرر سے قبل وہ نیویارک میں یونیسف ہیڈکوارٹر میں ڈیٹا، منصوبہ بندی، تجزیات اور مانیٹرنگ کی ڈپٹی ڈائریکٹر، نائجیریا میں ڈپٹی سربراہ، عراق میں چیف آف فیلڈ آپریشنز اور غزہ پٹی میں فیلڈ آفس کی سربراہ کی حیثیت سے خدمات انجام دینے کے علاوہ یمن اور مشرقی کانگو میں بھی فرائض ادا کر چکی ہیں۔

محترمہ آئرن سائیڈ نے مزید کہا، ’’پاکستان کی تقریباً نصف آبادی 18 سال سے کم عمر اور دو تہائی 30 سال سے کم عمر نوجوانوں پر مشتمل ہے، اس لیے پاکستان میں ترقی کےغیر معمولی امکانات موجود ہیں۔ یہ نوجوان آبادی تبدیلی کا محرک بن سکتی ہے۔ تعلیم، ابتدائی بچپن اور نوزائیدہ کی دیکھ بھال، غذائیت، محفوظ پانی، بچوں کے تحفظ اور ماحولیاتی استحکام میں سرمایہ کاری کر کے ہم بچوں اور نوجوانوں کی صلاحیتوں اور تخلیقی قوتوں کو اجاگر کر سکتے ہیں تاکہ ترقی اور خوشحالی کے عمل کو فروغ مل سکے۔ میں پاکستان میں یونیسف کے مشن کی قیادت کرنے اور ہر ایک بچے کی فلاح و بہبود کو یقینی بنانے میں اپنا کردار ادا کرنے کیلئے پرعزم ہوں۔‘‘
