FAO & Agriculture Department Celebrate KP’s First-Ever Commercial Ginger Harvest
WHEN:
15 December 2025
WHERE: FAO office Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP)
WHAT’s HAPPENING:
For the
first time in Khyber District, farmers have successfully
harvested high-quality ginger—traditionally an imported crop—following a pilot jointly implemented by FAO, Agriculture Research KP, Agriculture Extension KP, and Nishtar Farms. The event celebrates this landmark moment and highlights the potential for expanding
commercial ginger cultivation across KP.
WHY IT MATTERS:
- Ginger imports cost Pakistan
USD 42.7 million in 2023.
- The pilot proves that KP’s climate and soil are suitable for domestic ginger production.
- Farmers now have access to a
high-return to low-value crops.
- The initiative opens pathways for
new value chains, youth employment, women’s participation, and reduced foreign exchange pressure.
KEY PARTICIPANTS:
- FAO Acting Representative in Pakistan
- Secretary Agriculture, Government of KP
- Director General Agriculture Research KP
- Director General Agriculture Extension KP
- Deputy Commissioner Khyber
- Representatives from NARC Islamabad, academia, and community stakeholders
