Workshop Cameroon - Integrating biological, socioeconomic data and modeling for conservation planning in Central Africa
Applications are welcome from early-career scientists and graduate students interested in biodiversity conservation by 30 March 2016.
The Central African Biodiversity Alliance (CABAlliance) is an international partnership that seeks to develop an integrated framework for conserving central African biodiversity under climate change that is both evolutionarily-informed and grounded in the socioeconomic constraints of the region. This five-year project is sponsored by the U.S. National Science Foundation - Partnership for International Research and Education Program and involves a broad range of research and educational activities through partnerships between African, European and U.S. universities, non-governmental and governmental organizations.

Professional development workshops are a keystone educational project activity, which bring together early-career scientists and graduate students from Cameroon, Gabon, Equatorial Guinea, Europe and the U.S. This workshop will provide cutting-edge training in:
• Collection and analysis of genetic data
• Collection of macro- and micro- socioeconomic data
• Geographic Information Systems (GIS)
• Statistical data analysis
• Professional skills development via a COACh workshop

Computers and software will be provided for use at the workshop. Website Travel and subsistence will be covered for U.S. and African participants. To apply send your C.V., contact information for two referees, and a statement of no more than 500 words about your background to Christa Gomez at cgo...@lifesci.ucla.edu.

Workshop on Research Methodology in Life Sciences & Social Sciences for Master and Ph.D. Students
09 February, 2016 at Faculty of science Boardroom
Organized by: The Department of Botany and Plant Physiology, University of Buea
Sponsored by: VLIR-UOS Training Scholarships for Developing Countries, Belgium

About the Workshop
The workshop is designed to offer comprehensive and practical guidelines for research in life and social sciences and direct the participants through all the stages of research—from identifying a viable research problem, prepare a proposal, collect and analyse data and report the results. It also emphasizes on the variety of quantitative and qualitative research methods used in life and social sciences, with particular emphasis on their merits and demerits. The methods will be illustrated by examples from the diverse fields in life and social sciences. The act of writing a good research proposal and reporting the results is a skill which must be learnt and not innate. Mastering the act however comes with practice which requires that the rudiments of the act be learnt and understood.

The objectives of this workshop are;

  • To aid graduate students and would-be-research fellows get a good grasp of the technicalities involved in the act of research designing, writing and publishing
  • To provide a comprehensive view of topics of great importance in the act of research writing to publication of results.

Eligibility criteria for participants
All the registered Master and Ph.D. students of social and life sciences departments in the University of Buea are eligible and the number of participants limited to 45.

How to Apply
Interested candidates can apply through the office of the HOD of Botany and Plant Physiology Department at the University of Buea on or before 08 February, 2016. You can apply by emailing the following information (Name, UB Number, Department, Level and a brief statement of motivation) to chuy...@yahoo.com.
