I think I broke any RSX11 image: I successfully booted RSX11 but did not set up an admin account password, and now RSX11 won't let me log in.

Step 22 - Finished

And I don't have an admin password.

I was hoping to be able to delete the users file (as the RSX11 manual suggests), so I tried turning on host file sharing.

But there is no CPU directory:

root@qbone:~/10.03_app_demo/5_applications# ls

211bsd.mscp name_scheme.txt  rt11.rk05  unixv6.rl02

43bsd_uvax.mscp  rsx11.mscp   rt11.rl02  vms44_uvax.rl02

lsx.rx01 rsx11.rl02   rt11.rx01  vms73_uvax.mscp

memory rt11.mscp   rt11.rx02  xxdp.rl02

None of these directories contain what looks like the RSX11 filesystem.

I added

so added the line

p shared_filesystem RSX11

to rsx11mp46_dl.cmd but the expected directory did not appear,

So I have two problems.

First: Is host file sharing expected to work for RSX11?

Second: How do I restore the RSX11 disk image to factory fresh?

I’m not sure exactly what you’ve done, but here is some general info on RSX11 and accounts.

The default system account is SYSTEM with password SYSTEM. The utility ACNT ( >RUN LB:[1,54]ACNT ) is used to add/modify accounts. It has a menu and dialog of questions. It makes changes to the file LB:[000000]RSX11.SYS which is the account database file.

You can stop the boot up dialog before it logs you off with ^C then ABO AT. which aborts the LB:[1,2]STARTUP.CMD file execution and then still be logged on to fix things.

From other posts, it looks like you are running an 11/23+ so you can run the versions of RSX11M in rsx11.rl02, but the RSX11M+ in rsx11.mscp is (I think) is RSX11M+ sysgenned for a I/D CPU (e.g. 11/73, 11/83, 11/93) .

Host file sharing only works on RT-11 RL02 disk images. RSX can read those RT-11 disks with the utility FLX if necessary.

If you truly need to restore the RSX11 disk image, the update-files.sh script at the root login directory will do that, but it updates all of the disk images so if you have a disk image in another QBone OS directory you want to save, rename it so it does not get over written.

Good Luck,
Mark

Thanks, Mark! Since it was described as ready to run, I assumed there was some kind of "standard" login; I didn't didn't know what it was "The default system account is SYSTEM with password SYSTEM." was the key I needed. I made a user account for myself and can log in. Time to learn RSX from a user's POV.
Now the thing I want is to be able to ssh into it through the Bone. It would make sense to keep that noisy beast in an equipment cabinet and learn MACRO from the comfort of my office.
