How to install Qbone?

I'm having difficulty with installing Qbone into my 11/83's BA23 bsckplane.  For some reason, no matter how much pressure I put on the handles, it won't go into the backplane slots.  Is there a trick to doing this?  I can wiggle grant continuity boards into the slots, but there isn't any wiggle room for the 4-wide board.

Robert,
I’ve had some trouble in the past seating QBones into certain backplanes. The widths of the four edge connectors that slide into the back plane are really tight.

I took a grant card that easily slipped into the back plane and measured the width of the connector with a digital micrometer. The QBone fingers were a few thousands wider than the grant card fingers. I then took a flat file and very carefully filed the side of the connector watching to not remove more of the circuit board material than absolutely necessary. Not all of the 4 connectors may need anything removed. The micrometer measurement can guide you on where things are too tight.

It helps if you have a backplane that is not in a chassis to better see where the edges are rubbing. Eventually, I was able to get the fingers to slide in without a huge amount of force.

Also, if you have some “Deoxit” to spray on the fingers that can help to provide a bit of lubrication as well as improving the electrical connection. Sometimes a backplane has some minor oxidation on the contacts that make the insertion more difficult as well as possibly poor connection.

Best,
Mark

I'll remember this for next around. Those with sensitive natures should
avert their eyes, but my solution for inserting the QBone involves laying
a short length of 1x2 pine against the outer edge and tapping with a
rubber mallet. If you are careful it will apply force only to the board
and not the BBB.

Same here. I feel the QBUS contact springs much stronger than UNIBUS
flip chip slots.

Had in fact to "hammer" QBone into my uVAX too ...

Now I feel relieved. Didn't want to be seen as treating the QBone in a
barbaric manner!

For those of you that have done this -- did you put the wood on the handle(s) and tap it, or on the board between the handles?
I picked up a rubber mallet and a couple of 1" x 2" pieces of wood today and want to know how to proceed.
