Belo Horizonte's newest BRT corridor, MOVE Antônio Carlos, can reduce travel times by 40% for more than 40,000 daily users.

New BRT Corridors Prep Brazilian Cities for the 2014 World Cup

Just ahead of the 2014 World Cup, several cities across Brazil have launched new corridors of bus rapid transit, improving mobility and connectivity for visitors and residents alike. In May, Rio de Janeiro and Belo Horizonte inaugerated the TransCarioca and MOVE Antônio Carlos corridors. The new routes will provide critical transport during the World Cup, and supply efficient transport for city residents for years to come. Many local and national officials, including Brazilian President Dilma Rousseff, attended the TransCarioca opening, which is the first rapid transit connecting the city's airport with downtown Rio and the World Cup stadium. In Belo Horizonte, the Antônio Carlos corridor joins MOVE Cristiano Mahcado, which opened in March as the city's first BRT corridor. With new routes and new opportunities, transit in Brazil is soaring to to new heights.

ITDP Releases First Part of Series Exploring the Role of National Governments in Urban Transit Growth

Cities are growing rapidly, and their transit systems need to keep up. A new report released by ITDP evaluates nine influential countries to see if their investment in urban mass transit is keeping pace with the needs of their growing populations. The report examines the type, cost, quality and growth of transit in these countries and identifies opportunities for building more transit quicker and cheaper. The report introduces a new metric, kilometers of mass rapid transit per urban resident (RTR), which places the growth of transit in context by comparing it with the size of the urban population. The report is the first part of a series, Best Practice in National Support for Urban Transport, investigating how cities have obtained assistance from their national governments to meet their pressing urban mobility challenges.Read more about the report.
