Hi!

Our Crowd funding campaign almost doubled our amount of money raised from 6.540,00 EUR to 11.263,14 EUR. Awesome!

And if we're very lucky, we might get a big chunk of the rest of the money we need from nlnet! :) They're a foundation who fund many cool projects: http://nlnet.nl/project/current.html

They do not want to influence what we do in our project, but they do want to get some feedback, to measure whether we used their money well. This means we have to write down beforehand what we think we will be doing, and rewrite this whenever our insights change. We also have to let them know whenever we finish a part of it, because they release their donations progressively, linked to the milestones that we agree beforehand.

I personally don't think this would be a problem, I think it's very reasonable. But let me know if anyone is against accepting these terms.

Right now our budget is based on me working full-time, and other people (like Siddhant and Jack) contributing as unpaid students, or on the payroll of a company who adopts our standard (like Nexedi), or in their spare time (the rest of us). With the money from nlnet, we could have another full-time developer working inside the project. That way, we speed up the project, and can reach our goals earlier.

If you would be interested in working full-time for Unhosted e.V., then please let me know. It's hard to predict what skills we require, but it's not necessarily programming. A lot of stuff already exists in libraries and open source apps, and what we develop is an architecture (a protocol) and not a piece of software, so actual lines of code is probably not what we need primarily. But to name some criteria, i guess you would have to be smart, get things done, work pro-actively and efficiently, and care more about freedom of the web than about your own salary. If you know someone who might be interested, then please refer them as well. Again, it is not certain yet whether this position would really be available, but it's good to know whether we could find candidates for this, if it were.

We'll hold a general members' meeting via IRC on 9 September, so that we can vote on all these decisions. But if you have an opinion about it, whether it would be good or bad, then please comment now, so that I know in which direction I should try to push things.

I am very excited about this myself, but want to know if anyone sees a problem with it.

Cheers!
Michiel

Last call!

If you think you might be interested, and you haven't told me yet,
then please tell me now...

It looks like we'll probably get the money, and I think that rather
than someone who writes apps from scratch, what we need would be
something like a 'technology adoption advocate' - someone who makes
sure all like-minded existing projects accept our patches, so that all
apps and all storage providers will be compatible with one another. In
any case, we would match tasks and skills and find a way that works,
as long as there's unstoppable enthusiasm, and of course, a healthy
Disregard for The Impossible. :)

Cheers!
